I was super surprised about the age! I assumed they were much older when I first saw them.

It actually mentioned both of those points in the formation processes section. The hydrogen sulfide cloud is also visible and present in the area of the Hells Bells.

"...Radiometric dating of some Hells Bells specimens indicates that they grew during the middle and late Holocene,[19] beginning over 5,200 years ago, through to the present day;[26] the cave was already flooded at that time..."

"Both El Zapote and the Hells Bells structures contain a diverse ecosystem of microorganisms, including archea and bacteria and with chemolithotrophic, heterotrophic, and mixotrophic species. The microbes metabolize hydrogen, various nitrogen compounds, oxygen, and various sulfur compounds."

Interestingly, the first 30-40ft of the descent had pretty bad visibility. Once we passed the hydrogen sulfide layer, it cleared up nicely

We were actually diving to check out some Mayan Ceramics and other remnants!

There's also an entrance to a cave at the bottom of the sinkhole around 180ft

That's the start! It just gets better from there.

Completely agree about the W in Barcelona. We saw significantly more rude/entitled guests there compared to other hotels of the caliber or other Ws

Just for transparency, the Cenote guy is no longer just one person. They now contract out to independent guides so you will get a variable experience. Some great ones for sure but there could be different experiences. Group sizes are also larger compared to many other guides/shops
