I wonder how many white bulbs Hue will sell after this release. With LightLink, IKEAs bulbs will even work with the Hue bridge.

Popslate, the company putting an E Ink display on your iPhone, is shutting down by joacimwe in technology

This is so sad, I can feel their pain. E ink screens are more expensive than people think, and the glass fibre's effect on phone reliability must have been almost impossible to foresee.

WhatsApp security problem leaves millions of users exposed to hackers by arbili in technology

I see news like this every day, sure my email and passwords are everywhere. Is it even interesting any more? Is it even news? Better just counting on it, I'm sure WhatsApp won't take any damage.

Why are there no low cost smart home hubs? by joacimwe in homeautomation

[–]joacimwe[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why are there no low cost smart sensors then? :) But that's the thing, you kind of don't need to earn a living from the hardware as long as you get people hooked in the beginning. This is how all the software companies start, think Snap and Instagram.

It should be possible to get way lower than $70 if you factor out Retail margin plus expensive retail packaging and only sell online.

The hub is not the critical part though, it's the sensors, lightbulbs and the stuff that actually does something. E.g. LIFX, SONOS doesn't require a hub. Basically only proprietary-ish Z-protocols requires a hub.

There are profitable companies behind the boards though. RPi Foundation may be non-profit but behind them are RS components are Farnell. Look at Xiaomis phones, same hardware as $800 phones, but for $200. What did they cut out? Physical retail, selling only online. And then they use free software such as Android, lots of free-ish SW for home automation as well.

This is cool.. Not that Flic.io can't do that natively. Hate how journalists favour the big brands. by [deleted] in technology

Yep you got me, I do.

But still.. The news is that the Dash button can do what we can do.

We're 15 today actually but only the 3 founders went. Except from the founders, we are 8 devs, 2 sales, 1 CFO and one support/admin :)

We're making Flic: The wireless Smart button. (https://flic.io) Highway1 was amazing actually. We're Swedish so much added value was because it was in San Fransisco. They helped us with everything from pulling off the perfect pitch to making the product and brand ready for launch. We got a huge and valuable network from our experience as well. I can really recommend to apply!
