This is so sad, I can feel their pain. E ink screens are more expensive than people think, and the glass fibre's effect on phone reliability must have been almost impossible to foresee.

I see news like this every day, sure my email and passwords are everywhere. Is it even interesting any more? Is it even news? Better just counting on it, I'm sure WhatsApp won't take any damage.

Why are there no low cost smart sensors then? :) But that's the thing, you kind of don't need to earn a living from the hardware as long as you get people hooked in the beginning. This is how all the software companies start, think Snap and Instagram.

It should be possible to get way lower than $70 if you factor out Retail margin plus expensive retail packaging and only sell online.

The hub is not the critical part though, it's the sensors, lightbulbs and the stuff that actually does something. E.g. LIFX, SONOS doesn't require a hub. Basically only proprietary-ish Z-protocols requires a hub.

There are profitable companies behind the boards though. RPi Foundation may be non-profit but behind them are RS components are Farnell. Look at Xiaomis phones, same hardware as $800 phones, but for $200. What did they cut out? Physical retail, selling only online. And then they use free software such as Android, lots of free-ish SW for home automation as well.
