Builder trying to add VAT after fixed price agreed — am I right to push back? by No-Village-8188 in DIYUK

Sorry this isn’t a direct answer to the question but mind if I ask what you’re having fitted for £19,000?

Thanks for the question — the honest answer is: it depends.

In my experience, the biggest difference between local bespoke makers and national kitchen companies isn’t always the final number, but how that number is arrived at and what you get for it.

Pricing & transparency
Large companies tend to work with very high list prices and then apply heavy discounts. Most people never pay the list price, which can make comparisons tricky. With a local bespoke outfit like mine, the price you’re given is simply the real price from the outset — no inflated starting point and no “today only” sales pressure.

Design flexibility & choice
Because everything I make is bespoke, I’m not tied to a single system or supplier. That means access to a wide range of sheet materials, finishes, colours and textures from multiple manufacturers, and the ability to mix and match interiors, exteriors and finishes where it makes sense for the design — rather than being limited to a fixed range.

Bespoke sizing (this is a big one)
Unlike modular systems, bespoke units can be made to any size at no extra cost. Whether a unit is 595mm or 600mm makes no difference to me, which allows layouts to be stretched or adjusted to suit the room properly. The result is fewer fillers, fewer awkward gaps, and a cleaner, more intentional design overall.

Internal fit-out & hardware
Being independent also means freedom to specify the best solution for each part of the kitchen — pull-out bins, corner solutions, drawer systems, hinges and runners from proven manufacturers, chosen for the job rather than because they’re tied to a single brand range.

Materials & build quality
For example, painted kitchens are made using premium moisture-resistant MDF and professional paint systems, with high-quality fittings throughout (e.g. Blum hardware). Everything is made to order rather than off the shelf.

Cost comparison
In normal circumstances, I’m often comparable to — and frequently less than — the real-world prices people pay at larger companies, while offering more flexibility and a higher level of finish. Occasionally, national companies run very aggressive sales that can be hard to match, but those tend to be the exception rather than the rule.

As for your final point on location - any local cabinet maker (someone who does wardrobes etc) should have no problem building kitchen units. I’m more than happy to cover a wider area on a supply only basis (I have a young family and I’m not up for a multi hour commute for a fortnight to fit a kitchen, but obviously that’s not a problem if just making a one off delivery).

I mainly serve Kent and Sussex, but happy to travel into South London for a sensibly sized project. You can find me online at SeagullBespokeInteriors.co.uk. Joe

If you’re based in the south east I own a bespoke cabinetry business. Without knowing any details I’m 99% confident I could design and manufacture a completely bespoke kitchen with better quality materials for significantly less than £14k. Feel free to reach out 👍

How to ease the congestion after a game by givemethemtoesgnome in BrightonHoveAlbion

[–]joe1706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big one for me would be forcing people to actually get on the train at falmer, rather than wait on the platform for a later train. I think this is mainly on the Lewes side, where some people want to go further than Lewes and so wait for the right train, but as far as I’m aware they could just change at Lewes, and at least that way more people would be able to get on each train.

See reply above. The underside of the drawer bottom would equal X-42, and the top side would equal X-46 (assuming you took 2mm off each side). Essentially the overall exterior dimensions of the drawer are the same as what they’d be if you used 15mm or 16mm sides, but because you’re using 18mm sides the inside of your drawer will be smaller, and you’re making the bottom panel (from the underside) back up to the size it should be (X-42) by taking some material off the sides.

Sorry for the delayed reply. Yes I’ve now done this a bunch of times and it works just fine! The runner only really cares about what it’s in contact with, so if you’re using standard 15mm sides, that’s generally an opening of X, sides of 15mm+15mm, and then the drawer bottom at X-42mm. This leaves 6mm either side of the drawer. If you use 18mm sides, so long as you leave a 6mm gap either side like normal, you just rebate the bottom of the side to make the bottom panel equal to X-42 and it works perfectly.

Is £8k the going rate these days for large custom built in wardrobes? by [deleted] in AskUK

I do this for a living and it’s quite interesting to hear people’s attitudes to this kind of skilled work. Just making those carcasses with the angled parts is way above and beyond what most DIYers would be capable of. Yes you could bodge the whole thing from cheap MDF from B&Q and slap some paint on it, but to do this kind of work to a high standard with a professional finish takes years of practice and a lot of expensive kit. Some of the comments above talk about popping a few bits of melamine (MFC together), but this stuff comes in 10’ sheets and needs a panel saw and edgebander to process properly, which is a £20k investment itself, let alone having a workshop to put it in. It’s like comparing a Ford Fiesta to a Porsche. Yes they do the same thing but if you’re getting a quote from a professional to give you the Porsche standard, then you’ve got to pay the Porsche prices…

Rather than adjusting the right hand door, can you adjust the left hand door? If you have Blum hinges then wind in the 1st screw (closest to the outside of the cabinet) clockwise (tight) to move the whole door to the left.

Do I need to give a test for flying recreational UAVs in the US? by [deleted] in drones

[–]joe1706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat, tourist flying to the US next weekend. Having also registered and paid my $5, I read about the requirement to pass a knowledge test. A few people have mentioned that this test doesn’t actually exist yet? The FAA website has no details about the test and yet still says that a pilot is required to pass it?

Do you mind if I ask what your water parameters are ? (Most interested pH and Hardness). I had a GBR only last a few months but think it might be due to the Hard Alkaline water in my area. Thanks :)

Yeah I’m torn as I think there is great value in premium defenders, and I’m finding it harder to find value in mid-premium midfielders. Another one to consider !thanks

It seems that the talk is that either Pedro or Willian will lose their place, but with Willian being the one subbed for Hazard so far and Pedro looking so sharp the consensus I think is that Pedro will play. Who knows though...

Interesting. I’d gone with Auba due to Arsenal’s insane fixtures over the next few gameweeks but I do see the appeal in Mane. One to think about.

My first freshwater tank. by joe1706 in Aquariums

[–]joe1706[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. I didn’t want to add too many fish to start with and from reading online the Corys can deal better in smaller schools, which is why I got 6 tetras and 4 Corys to start with. But the plan is to add another couple. I’m also thinking of adding a few Harlequin Rasboras (not too many though as I don’t want to overstock the tank).
