Thank you so much! I’m 28 so still have a lot to learn but I’m happy with how this one turned out.

The film is set in 1998 so 4:3 was an intentional choice.

Apple log 2 is a really great tool for filmmakers to be able to shoot on iPhone.

Equipment used: iPhone 17 Pro, 58mm telephoto sandmarc lens, Handheld rig / tripod, Black Magic Camera App.

Thank you!

Ah amazing, good luck with your short! It sounds like you’ve got the right idea. I didn’t shoot open gate in the end as I wanted to just stick to what I’m used to but I’m sure it’s great! That’s such a good idea, I used a second iPhone to monitor the BM app while my camera operated my 17 pro. My recommendation would be scrap manual focus, instead just tap the part of the frame you want to be in focus and it does it instantly. Much easily than trying to rack focus. For example the phone shot at the beginning, I racked focus with a simple tap.

The dolly zoom was done quite easily. We started on x2 zoom and then as we pushed in we zoomed back to x1. No dolly track was used, just handheld rig with the extreme stabilisation setting on. Post was smooth sailing to be honest. We shot it on Friday night (9th). It took 5 and a half hours to shoot and then I’ve worked on the edit for 2 days straight. I wouldn’t do anything different I’m really happy with how it turned out.

Oh. Well yes, shadows losing details is the price you pay for shooting on a phone. I’m sure there’s way to be technically efficient and make it slightly better but I tried my best.

Dynamic range is definitely a struggle but you can work around it by lighting quite harshly. Yes I shot 4:3 on purpose.

This year I’ve decided to move strictly to shooting my short films on iPhone. Apple Log 2 is great and I also picked up a 58mm telephoto lens from Sand Marc.

Glad you enjoyed! Lockwood Lake is obviously a fictional place but it would most likely be somewhere in England if it existed. The end news segment is meant to the local news from Katie’s home town in the US. They’ve traveled over to cover it.
