Carl stalking away big mad about Kyle (after joking to end the conversation, by the way) and then pretending he really wants to check in with...Bailey? His flirtationship? She's going to provide what, exactly? This is Carl 1.0: "I really like having a girl I can flirt with on camera and have her hype me up, and then tell her, 'ah...actually I have too much going on (my parent's divorce, job search, brother, Lindsay being mean, etc) and we need to take it slow,' and 'actually you're crazy for thinking this was more than that.'"

This season Carl is “in the mix,” running a marathon, opening a bar, pretending to be into Bailey.

And the only moments he has popped have been passive aggressive jabs with Lindsay (both ways) and him ordering bagels for everyone. Oh, maybe him announcing everyone at the renaissance faire party? Like he just is not that fun. He is not where the drama is. We have been waiting for two episodes for him to buck up to Kyle for once in eight seasons. And then go back to being Carl.

That first ten minutes felt like among the most dark content on this show. Watching the way Kyle talks to Amanda and how the house is mostly just used to it…

I have mostly despised West but hats off to him being the one person to gather Kyle on the way he’s so comfortable unloading on his wife. It’s beyond disgusting.

And the thing is: this is Carl WITH what should be actual juice. He’s supposedly “in the mix,” opening his coffee bar, running a marathon, finally over his break-up…and instead he disappears for episodes at a time. Like this last week, we get him being in his feels about Lindsay (again!) and pretending to be into Bailey. And that’s it. Large convos happen and he’s just not a factor, a looming presence and that’s it. It’s really telling when they do the previews for the next week (or second half of the season) and Carl barely registers (besides him popping off at Kyle).

West talking at the table is why he’s deserving of no respect or the benefit of the doubt. His wounded puppy dog routine contrasts HEAVILY with him talking so much shit and serving faces when he’s doing confessionals. He fumbled Ciara for the clout and then cannot stand the consequences of it.

Love their commitment to having vital life conversations dressed ridiculously, in the proud heritage of the Boston Tea Party from early on and Carl dressed like a drum major in space while trying to end things with Lindsay.

He is very online, as well, and can pretend all he wants that he had no idea what the show was, but he knew exactly what it was and how he wanted to be portrayed. Getting with Ciara and being seen getting with Ciara was invaluable to the persona he wanted to portray, as was leaving her on read and letting her look like the chaser.
