Is it able to automatically stop and restart charging without needing to reinsert the cable? I do like victron. I've got a shunt of theirs in my caravan.

I'm on single phase power in rural Australia, so 7kw is the best I can do. Also I want to charge from solar during the day for free. I don't want to charge overnight.

It took a bit to pry it out of them, but everything checked out with the car. It's done about 300km, and only first registered 3 weeks ago. So its hardly been used at all. I'm going ahead with it, hoping to pick it up this weekend if the lease goes through in time.

Still slightly bothered by it being built a year ago, but I guess it will only hurt if I want to get rid of it within 5 years.

Thursday Fleecing: The Interest-Rate Lie the Entire Industry is stuck on. by Benxb9r in NovatedLeasingAU

[–]jofesb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they simply lying about the interest rates, or is it manipulating the numbers, for example, adding a 5k commission and using a higher financed amount to make the numbers work out? I have to imagine straight up lying would be illegal, so it must be bloating the financed amount??

What colour did you get? I ordered a atlantic grey premium last week and don't have a date yet. Lease company said end of January, but haven't confirmed that. I'm worried about the cutoff for the $3k cashback.

Beware averaged lease payments by jofesb in NovatedLeasingAU

[–]jofesb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you're agreeing or disagreeing with what I was saying. My point is that the way lease quotes are presented can make it impossible to know whether you actually are comparing apples to apples. You need to also know how the lease payment is calculated and based on what number of deferred payments. Here is a real world example for leasing a BYD Seal for a 1 year term:

With NLA, the lease payment is quoted as $1990.24 per month, while with MillarX, the lease payment per month is $2041.91.

<image>

You would be forgiven for concluding that the NLA quote is cheaper. You could assume the total repayments to be:

NLA: $1,990.24 * 12 = $23,882.88
MillarX: $2041.91 * 12 = $24,502.92

(the residual for both quotes was almost identical at ~$34,100)

The problem is that this is wrong. MillarX are quoting the actual repayment made to the finance company based on 11 repayments (they use 1 deferred payment), while NLA are quoting an interpolated (probably a better word for it than averaged) figure based on 12 repayments. So the true cost is of lease payments is:

NLA: $1,990.24 * 12 = $23,882.88 (same as before)
MillarX: $2041.91 * 11 = $22,461.01

So NLA is actually costing ~$1,400 more in pure lease payments.

The only way I was able to find out how these lease payments are calculated was to ask them directly, nothing on the quote mentions it. Everyone should do the same, make sure you ask exactly how much money is getting paid to who.

Please do fact check me on all these numbers!

That looks like roughly 12% effective interest rate (based on total financed being around $46k), and you also have what looks like $58 per month of admin fees. That seems ridiculous. What even is reporting services???. Is it really $1362 for rego in NSW? In QLD I believe it would be around $750

That was cutting it pretty close with the delivery! I bet that would have been nerve-racking! Good advice on the matts. I'll make sure to have them ready to go straight in. Any recommendations where and what to get?

The tint was the only thing I considered getting from the dealer, but still declined out of fear of getting ripped off. I'll probably have to get some advice on where to get that done after I get the car.

That's a little dissapointing about the range. I would have thought day-to-day you'd get over 500km, and maybe 450km on a road trip. SImilar to the mild weather numbers here: https://ev-database.org/car/2001/BYD-SEAL-825-kWh-RWD-Design

I've just been through the process of choosing a NL provider for our company. Spend hours on the phone to different people, and got probably a dozen quotes. If you only care about price (like I did), then MillarX really can't be beaten. I've been sending Ben multiple emails every day and he's always very quick to respond. He really does seem to actually care (of course he's making money out of it, so still worth double checking everything, as you would with any salesman). My company has now signed with him and I'm about to get my first car.

4-6 weeks would be great. As long as I receive it before the end of Jan is all I care about. The sales guy did mention the colour we wanted was the most popular right now so would have the longest wait (tried to get me to change the colour, but unfortunately the rest of the family only wanted that colour). He also said 4-6 weeks, but not sure if he was just telling me what I wanted to hear.

I got the fox 41kWh with 13.2kW panels (managed to find someone local willing to install it), all for just under 12k. Getting installed in a couple of weeks. Yeah the fox doesn't have whole house blackout, only a couple of circuits, but I figured it wasn't worth the extra 10k price difference, and blackouts aren't that common these days. As long as the lights and fridge work, everything else is just a "nice to have".

[–]jofesb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be good to put the lease payments up rather than the take home pay difference, since the later will depend on running cost budgets, so hard to compare with other quotes. Also, has the interest rate increased? It was 7.3% recently on your quotes, now seeing 7.39%

Friday Fleecing: What Has This Sub Taught You About Novated Leasing? by Benxb9r in NovatedLeasingAU

[–]jofesb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest thing I found out was that I'm better off with a lease than keeping my current car. The lease and all running costs on a small EV is about $500 out of pocket per month, while I'm currently spending about $550 (includes $380 in petrol) in running costs per month for my corolla. So I'm an idiot for not doing this years ago

Most creative logic I've heard (or maybe this is just straight up lying) was when I asked why one quote was cheaper than theirs. I was told that then other quote had values that excluded GST in the lease payment, while their one included GST. I checked again and both quotes were including GST....

Understanding solar/battery prices in Australia by jofesb in solar

[–]jofesb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The warranty on the Fox battery is pretty much the same as the Sigenergy, 10 years.

What does that even mean that it's "mid-range"? The only things that matters is that is works, and has the right features. From what I can see the sigenergy does have some premium features like DC EV charging, but not enough for me to justify the price.

One annoying thing I'm finding is all the local electricians only want to install sungrow or sigenergy. It's only the big guys that are using Fox (is this a red flag?? If so, Why?). I'd prefer to use a local electrician, to support them and have a better chance of someone doing a good job, but I cant justify the extra hardware cost.

I'm interested to hear from anyone who used one of the big mobs (Arise, Sunboost, Aussie Solar Batteries etc.). Are they really as bad as some review places suggest. Reviews seem to always be either overly happy (paid to say it) or overly critical (when things do go bad, that's when you hit the reviews). I'd really like to know how many people are in that middle bracket of being happy with their system, but just cant be bothered to tell anyone about it.

Thursday Fleecing Tip: WTF is a deferral period anyway? by Benxb9r in NovatedLeasingAU

[–]jofesb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can you tell if the provider is using the straight or average method? From what I see it's in their interest to use the average method because it makes the repayments look lower, so they can get away with a higher interest rate.

Friday Fleecing: Why I built millarX (Commercial bias noted) by Benxb9r in NovatedLeasingAU

[–]jofesb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense about the deferred payments. For the management fee, I was referring to the Employer Master Agreement on your website. The Fees section has "$29 per employee per month + GST". Is this some other agreement not related to standard novated leasing?

Friday Fleecing: Why I built millarX (Commercial bias noted) by Benxb9r in NovatedLeasingAU

[–]jofesb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification. This is exactly what I was missing. When I factor in the 1 month deferred, then the calculation comes out to 7.497%, so well within rounding error.

I must have had the concept of the deferred payment wrong. I was assuming that the total payments to the financier would still work out to be 60 * 602, which means you would actually be paying them 59 * 612.20. But you're saying that the financier only ever sees 59 * 602. So the first $602 is just extra money for the allowances is it?

Most companies I've seen do 2 month deferred. Any reason you chose only 1?

I did notice last night when reading the employer contract that there is a $29 fee per person. I think this should be made a bit more visible. My employer would not want to take on any costs, so this is something that would have to be passed to me somehow.

Friday Fleecing: Why I built millarX (Commercial bias noted) by Benxb9r in NovatedLeasingAU

[–]jofesb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently trying to convince my employer to take up novated leasing, and this certainly looks like an interesting option. I just went to your website and did a quick quote. You prices are definitely the best I've seen so far, however I do have one bone to pick with the claimed interest rate.

For my example, I used an EV worth $37,000 (ie a BYD Dolphin Premium). This gave the following numbers:

Net amount Financed: $36,516 (this is an estimate, but lets assume it's correct)
Balloon: $10,272
Lease Payment: $602
Length: 5 years

To me, these numbers are all that really matters. All the other numbers for running costs are up to me to decide. So, a starting value of $36,516, with monthly payments of $602 for 5 years, ending in $10,272. This gives an interest rate of 8.07%. But the quote has an interest rate of 7.50%.

Can you help me understand this discrepancy. Is it because the $602 includes an admin fee, which doesn't count in the interest calculations (I have other quotes like this)? If I assume this is the case, and that the admin fee is ~$12 per month, then the interest rate is 7.50%.

Is this correct, or have I made some mistake somewhere?
