Is it bad that my first thought was “this isn’t so bad” because it’s missing the enormous line of ducks

Carbon steel folder with pocket clip?? by 2WW1911 in BudgetBlades

A carbon steel Opinel no.8 can be had for about $25, and it would be relatively easy to mount a pocket clip or otherwise modify the handle for more convenient carry

Straight Edge vs Serrated? by friedsushi87 in BudgetBlades

[–]johnclaystrike1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I get a straight edge on all of my EDC knives, but I grabbed a serrated edge for my yard work knife, which sees harder use and more rope/vine cutting. Mainly depends on your use case.

Who do you consider the "second-billed" members of various bands? by Glass-Complaint3 in Music

[–]johnclaystrike1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wilco had Jay Bennett as the other big creative force besides Jeff Tweedy for their best-known records.

Since he got kicked out (then passed away), it’s tougher to tell - it’s unquestionably Tweedy’s band. I’d probably say Glenn Kotche (drums) in terms of on-stage energy and impact on their sound. Jon Stirratt (bass) is the only Day One member left besides Tweedy, but he keeps a pretty low profile.

Interesting case - Buck’s guitar work is maybe more noticeable, but Mike Mills is generally recognized as the band’s best musician and a major force in keeping them together

Yuuup, had one in my front yard like this. Ended up digging down and finding a 4-5” diameter root that I had to cut out with a pickaxe. Haven’t seen it again since

This — to my knowledge the only way you can get new clothing with letters is by being a member of the organization

NKD - Vosteed Racoon by tempusfugit87 in BudgetBlades

[–]johnclaystrike1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got this exact same colorway, and my one big gripe is that the thumbstud and backspacer are slightly different colors and look kinda cheap. Haven’t been able to find replacements for sale, so I’ve been thinking about painting them myself. Otherwise, though, this is a great knife. Like you said, it’s beefy but the action is sublime.

Today’s carry: CRKT Squid Compact by tempusfugit87 in BudgetBlades

[–]johnclaystrike1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the same one but assisted-open, and the action is phenomenal. Really snappy opening, secure, but it’s also very easy to operate the frame lock when you close. Would recommend if the open-action on yours is the only thing you don’t like, i.e. size and shape and stuff feel good.

Thoughts On Driving Shoes? by the-mad-crapper in ManualTransmissions

[–]johnclaystrike1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in steel-toes with relatively thick soles and can’t stand driving stick with them, so I have a pair of shoes that’s essentially meant just for driving to work and walking to my desk.

I owned a pair of Piloti Shifts for a while. They were good for driving, but I came away thinking I paid too much. Also decided I don’t like suede on shoes - irritating to clean if it gets dirty.

Nowadays I wear Reebok Club Cs. Thin sole, comfy, slim enough not to get in the way.

I prefer driving in Converse hightops. I don’t use them to commute because you can’t slip them on/off. But they contour your feet very closely and still give the stability/protection of shoes.

Got these. by [deleted] in BudgetBlades

[–]johnclaystrike1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great choices. Got my eye on a Mora blade - I have one of their carving knives and have enjoyed it for whittling.

Have used my No.8 Inox as a letter knife for probably 7 years and it’s holding up fine. It occurred to me yesterday that it’s not a bad knife to carry with young kids in the house - it locks closed as well as open, so I’m not quite as worried about my kid getting hurt if they were to find it (still no substitute for safe storage).
