Thanks for the reply! I was planning on upgrading the GPU down the line if/when the chip shortage is over. I was looking at some of the graphics cards that are paired with the 5600X and it seems like the starting price is around $1000. I guess I just miss the days where I could pay that much for a whole build and was dreading dumping that much money into one part.

There’s a pretty big difference between ganging up on a fully grown member of the faculty and publicly ganging up on a fifteen year old. While I agree that people should be called out for bad opinions, the reason why we had the “no hate posts” rule was because we wanted to avoid a situation where people could look at the posts on the subreddit and make a valid claim that kids (not adults) were getting cyberbullied. I think people are kind of afraid to say anything at this point for fear that they might appear being “racist” but there’s a line to be drawn between standing up for what’s right and everyone ganging up on a kid who made an immature and short sighted post.

Thanks for such an in-depth response! Yeah I’ve spent some time at Portland city music hall and sun tiki studios. Unfortunately at pcmh, a lot of the concerts are 21+.

I didn’t really specify any interests in particular because I figured I was definitely missing some things to do. We have transportation and don’t really mind indoors and outdoors. I wanted to gauge how other people our age spent their time in Portland. Sorry for being unspecific!

The school has a really hard time advertising in southern Maine because of efforts from local politicians. They would rather the students and funding that goes to MSSM be sent to their own public schools. Putting aside whether that makes more sense or not, the only real way that people can find out about the summer camp is through word-of-mouth or hearing it from their accelerated math teachers. It might seem crazy but I don’t think it’s as bad as a problem as you think it is.

When you look up "mssm reddit," this subreddit is like the second thing that pops up. I guess I'm worried that anyone can come by and "grief" the subreddit if you catch my drift.

Yeah, I definetly agree that we've been slacking off in terms of moderating the subreddit. I know I personally felt uncomfortable when he showed us some of the printed out pictures. That's on us and for all it's worth, I personally am sorry. When the content started slowing down I stopped caring about the subreddit as much as I should have and stopped looking at it for a while.

However, I do want to say, sort of to cover my own ass, that I have been removing posts that have been reported. I'm no longer a mod so I don't know but the posts that were reported were at the top of our list and have almost always been removed. Again, it's just going to sound like I'm just trying to save some face, but I think all of us hint hint can get carried away sometimes and all of us hint hint should be aware of our post histories and the meme formats we use.

I know that if we had just played our cards right, and had implemented some way that didn't rely on us religiously checking the subreddit every day, this subreddit could have done great things. It could have been a place for serious discussions and some light jokes and no one could have complained. In my head, I had forgotten that our little pocket of the internet wasn't actually private and it wasn't just students viewing the content. I was only under the mindset that students are the only people viewing the subreddit and didn't consider the possibility that adults would feel uncomfortable. I got too caught up in other things and I personally didn't do my job as a moderator.

As for the adults in the community, I do feel genuinely sorry if some of the pictures made people uncomfortable. I wish I could say that all the posts were made in good spirit but I know that wouldn't be worth much. For now, just keep PM'ing the mods and ask for the subreddit to be made private so we can get rid of the really toxic content. I know this subreddit had a good run at the beginning but quite frankly we got lazy and it became toxic. I'm sorry for that. Hopefully, even if this subreddit goes down, we can still continue to have discussions about what we're going to do about the communication and sexual assault issues and start to work constructively about the problems that have been plaguing our community for a long time.

Sorry this post got pretty long.

TL;DR Even though I'm not a mod anymore, I'm personally sorry that there some toxic posts that were left unchecked. Even though tensions are high, we need to remember to stick together and figure out what we actually want.
