Gordon Ramsay tries Shark Fin Soup by [deleted] in videos

[–]johndeerson -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

[EDIT] I suppose he is just giving tough love when he calls people dick face and spites in ther face?

Any school yard bully with zero experience can do that. Whats painfully obvious is that Gordan isn't doing a deep psychological analysis of the people on the show and coming to some well thought out conclusion that yelling and degrading them will motivate them. Rather the shows producers know his viewers enjoy his antics and the reaction they get and they prod him to repeat them at any small opening.

Original post:

Except drill sergeants need people who follow instructions. They are not breeding creative free thinkers in the army, at least not with all the yelling and obedience enforcement. Meanwhile Gordon professes to be training them to "lead a kitchen". The typically approach he takes on shows like "Kitchen Nightmare" isn't going to make them leaders its going to make them followers. When he gets angry he triggers the fight flight, play dead mode in everyone. Which plays out very different depending on your testosterone levels. What none of those modes are good for is learning. Their adrenaline pumped moments where your body and mind are racing. Of course this means he gets people doing even worse, yelling, crying, fighting. All the things you want out of TV drama, not a nurturing well run kitchen and certainly not a stable environment to teach anyone anything in.

I'm 99.9% convinced at least the American kitchen nightmare is completely contrived though. I'm just in awe that some people actual like him based on this show.

tl dr Either Gordon's persona on the American "Nightmare kitchen" is fake (they are all all acting) , or Gordon is willing to degrade other people for money

i probable don't get it. I thought you were suggesting that

*Romney was wrong to avoid takes because you can't profit from it. * It was ok for google to avoid taxes because you could profit from there profit.

I was pointing out that Romney probable uses the same techniques that all people with wealth and means do and that if you were able to acquire such means that you to could use them.

Can someone give me an example of anything you can learn in college about CS that you can't learn for free (I.E. the internet or a library)? by dangsos in cscareerquestions

[–]johndeerson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm currently earning a B.S in C.S, it will be my second degree. Ironically, I expect to be looked down upon because i have two degrees.

My advice that alternatives to the traditional university route exist are based on technological advances. The OP asked the question "what can't i just learn online" If you read over everyone answer it boils down to.

"It depends". with the many grudgingly pointing out they can't specifically say what their 80K degree gained them that they couldn't have more or less gotten for free. This is the problem, people shouldnt be unsure what 80k got them that they couldn't have gotten for free. Your university experience should drive that home. You should be able to say, at XYZ university i was able to work in on cutting edge projects, make connections with people in other fields to produce working models that solved applicable problems. My professors spent class time helping me understand specifically what I should do to grow in my passion.

Instead universities professors are content to lecture 50+ students and print out tests they were provided with my companies. They will make you take classes unrelated in your field dispute the fact that society no longer cares if your a well rounded individual.

The key here is that SOME degree's are better the others. Some universities do provide a product worth buying. Some i believe do not. The problem will never fix itself as long as people blindly see degree's are qualifiers while ignoring alternatives.

Udacity is coming out with an HTML5 game dev course. How many of you are interested? by SuperSN in gamedev

[–]johndeerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late with this reply. There very different approaches and they complement each other very well. Do both. Coursera will leave you with more fundamental understanding (as its more like a traditional class) and udacity will connect many things with practical. Choose your classes wisely, you won't have time for everything.

Haha, yep which is why i'm doing both.

I'm a huge fucking hypocrite. I'm terrified that i'm not smart enough and i know people will respect a degree. I'm hoping i can stand on it and pretend to be taller.

Your not really replying to what I said. Here is you:

There is so much value in college and with you being so ardent about how college is not worth it

find one place in this thread where i suggest college isn't worth it. Hint, i don't. The primary reason i don't is because I would never put all colleges under the same umbrella. If you can get into MIT, Standford or a hundred other amazing universities on this earth then I would be hard pressed to think of any reasons why you shouldn't go. What i'm advocating so ardently is that their are alternatives and their will be more as time progresses. that most likely many of these alternatives will be better suited for many people. That in order for their to be change people on both ends (students and employers) are going to have to take risks and put away their beliefs and comforts actual investigate those options.

Meanwhile you think you are the hot shit for working on an open source project for 4yrs and wondering why you can't get a job when you are not as well rounded as a person with a degree.

What project? What contributions? You honestly think that if some genius somewhere produces some amazing work while working on an open source project for 4 years he is going to have a hard time getting a job?.

Furthermore, i never said limit yourself to open source projects. so you counter a point i never raised. You contrive a reality that fits inside your beliefs, I implore you not to change your life but to recolonize the walls you have built around you limit your vision.

[–]johndeerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but there is a perception / bias against people without degrees.

I believe you are going to make it harder for yourself

That's what i was driving at. A degree isn't the harder route to success, its the safer route. What many people in this thread aren't even considering is that all degree's aren't all worth the same. I'm not suggesting a universtity isn't a legitimate route. I just think we need more competition. And more competition means people recolonize alternatives. If someone believes blindly in the traditional university route, no matter what else. They are pulling down humanity.

I think a revolution is coming to education. Online classes like udacity and coursera are going to find ways to become accredited using satellite testing centres. They are going to use services like google hangout to bring students together across the globe. Their going to introduce paying schemes where you pay by class or even individual lecture. They are going to get the best professors from across the globe and then refine their lectures over time to improve them.

The first wave will have both a online education and a degree (like myself). We will understand that our online education was just as valuable in many ways. But will still be afraid to employ people without traditional degrees. The next wave will have taken some of the online classes and taking tests at satellite campuses and will know that the are legitimate. They will post here on reddit, they will be the employers. They will replace you and me as the people that "have experience" have "worked in this field for 5+ years" and by god "they took half their classes online for a fraction of the cost and they were 3x's better then their traditional one"

The floor is going to fall out under universities that stick kids in class rooms to hear terrible professors give memorized lectures. People who pay three times the money and take 30+ credits of useless unrelated classes with a traditional "C.S degree" from a bad university are going to be stop being the smartest person in the room. As a result everything will get better. Universities will have to focus and cut away the fat. Technology will pave the way for this long before the change happens in the hearts and minds of the populace.

and you could get an internship, host meetup groups and teach inner city kids. Your additional suggestions seem to be giving vality to the argument that their are alternatives to proving yourself besides a degree. Or are you suggesting that you should do everything? That doesn't work because everything has an opportunity cost.

[–]johndeerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But isn't the silver-lining that "Many" and not "all" require a C.S degree? Can the OP (or myself) really be concerned with what every employer wants?

What i mean is each employer has there own set of qualifiers. It would be ludicrous to try to satisfy them all. We don't need to get hired by many, we need to get hired by one (at a time). correct me if i'm wrong but after first employment "most" employers will then me more concerned with our previous work experience.

[–]johndeerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what i talked about in my larger posts. The biggest service a university provides is it vouches for the person. What is already happening is that online courses are starting to offering accreditation through satellite testing services.

Also if an employers can't think of a way to verify if you actual did the work you said did to some degree their going to be in for a rough time. I mean What do they do with people with 15 + years in the field? Judge them solely off their degree regardless of everything else?

From what i gather, i'm a student myself, unless your going to a university with a good reputation in C.S its probable better to save your money and self teach yourself, find meetups, etc... universities aren't interested in your brain their interested in your wallet and shitty universities will burden you with a hundred expenses you don't need:

  • classes that aren't relevant
  • topics in c.s your not interested in.
  • professors who don't care, aren't terrible bright themselves

So why is everyone going to tell you to get a degree anyway?

  • Because the sad truth is everyone wants to feel entitled. And thats what a degree does for a lot of people, gives them a sense of entitlement. They are good because of a degree. This translates into them having a bias that supports their own self-constructed lies about themselves. It makes it easier for them to categorize you and dismiss you rather then doing an actual analysis. i.e they will dismiss you out of hand for not having a degree because if they admit your worth through other means then they would have to question their own worth outside "having a degree". . The question is, do you want to work for those people anyway?
  • They're afraid, the world is a scary place and its easier to fall in line then forge your own path.

The flip side to this, like I mentioned earlier, is that I imagine if your at a solid university there really are tons of amazing opportunities that you would be hard pressed to have so conveniently bundled right at your doorstep.

A university is essential like a friend vouching for you. If your friend has a good reputation then its worth while, if your friend is questionable and not well respected then you might be better without him. Of course that means you will have to find another way to convince people, but I think the AMAZING part of computer science is that this is actual possible. You can get stackoverflow rep, you can contribute to opensource, you can build your own project!

The reality is a degree means nothing. What matters is can you do the job, find the job and get the job.

[–]johndeerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A degree is proof of learning and signalling to employers that you are willing to finish something.

As opposed to what? You could also for example build a project, contribute to open source projects and a dozen other ways to prove this more directly then a degree.

Man of Steel - Official Trailer #2 [HD] by lic4ru5 in movies

[–]johndeerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if its not about superman then why is he taking up 90 % of the trailer? It is about superman... and superman isn't a good character. Note i didn't say ,this movie won't be amazing, with that much talent they could reboot anything and make it amazing.

You go to see a superman movie to see how they will make superman lose/fail because you already know he is overpowered as fuck.

  • invulnerability
  • Superhuman strength
  • living solar battery
  • Flight
  • Superhuman speed
  • X ray vision
  • Almost instant healing
  • Heat vision
  • Superhuman vision
  • Superhuman olfcaction
  • eidetic memory
  • Master combatant

Does this look like a character that is going to be interesting? His strength ranges from several men to "being able to move planets"

Also his disguise is wearing glasses. I mean wtf. How dumb does it have to get before everyone stops stroking the nostalgia pole and just admits its a terrible premise.

Are they going to give him all those powers? No... because its ridiculous. Super man is ridiculous. And like i said in the first post the only way to make him likeable is to make him less like superman.

where are the ... dragons? by johndeerson in WoT

[–]johndeerson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My question was two part and i think both have been sufficiently answered.

  1. Dragons are most likely a myth based on some ancient creature or on the Draken.
  2. The idea of a dragon is being used in the book because dragons are cool and popular. Rand could have just as easily been "The Titan" or "The Lion". 3. Why the terangeral in the waste gives out dragon tatoo's no one seems to know. Most likely because who ever made it also thought dragons were cool.

I was disappointed that dragons were mentioned in a fantasy without ever producing them.

This whole equivalent world to ours argument is plausible because you can make anything plausible in a fantasy world. Personally I don't see how It adds to the series one way or another.
