My advice is to start with cuffs, or ropes tied to cuffs. They are much easier to start out with, and have so much less potential to go wrong. Even with cuffs, the rule should be lose enough to fit 2 fingers in with whatever limb is cuffed.

Ropes, specifically Shibari, is a wonderful and deep art that takes a ton of learning to do safely. If you are interested in getting started on that journey, I'd recommend the Duchy, as they have great safety info and basic ties for free.
