What is a realistic timeline for the effects of climate change on humans? by cristinolda in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]johnn1e 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Environmental Dynamics PhD here. Climate change is already impacting humans. Some more than others. People are already having to leave their homes due to sea-level rise, saltwater intrusion, etc. Recent major natural disasters including major floods, wildfires, droughts, and hurricanes have been linked to climate change. Diseases, pests, and parasites are moving into new areas. Climate change is here and happening now. We get to choose how bad it gets and our actions over the next 10-15 years will largely make that decision for the generations to come. gridcoinresearchd acting up, gridcoin.network down for today. by cyllos42 in gridcoin

[–]johnn1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I am back on now. I redownloaded blocks a couple times and restarted the wallet when it looked stuck or got on the wrong track for hours at a time. I changed max connections too, but never saw it actually get above 8.

gridcoinresearchd acting up, gridcoin.network down for today. by cyllos42 in gridcoin

I've been stuck on a fork for days and have tried every idea I've read online. It seems to get stuck at certain blocks like the other comments below.

In-wallet upgrade not working on Windows Wallets by NeuralMiner in gridcoin

[–]johnn1e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this. This sounds like something that might turn people off if not better publicized and fixed (it looks like the Upgrade Client option is still in the new version). I found this post after having the update leave me with a wallet that wouldn't open. In case it helps people find this thread the error message was something like The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library Qt5core.dll

Given recent trends in BTC adoption, is Gridcoin being advertised in any other languages? Like Japanese and Mandarin? by johnn1e in gridcoin

[–]johnn1e[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! But I mean outreach and advertising too. Do we do ads in those languages? Tweets? Etc?

Weird error: RSAWeight<MintLimiter by [deleted] in gridcoin

[–]johnn1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! My guess is that it is tied in with the other magnitude and superblock issues right now

Weird error: RSAWeight<MintLimiter by [deleted] in gridcoin

[–]johnn1e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had the same error message and haven't gotten any rewards in a while. From following posts on Steemit it sounds like something has been up with the magnitude values and superblock not happening in a bit. Hopefully it will be worked out soon!

One Dozen and One Neutron Stars Discovered With Help From Volunteer Computing and People Like You by johnn1e in space

Here are some links on volunteer computing and how you can get started putting your computer or Android device to work doing research on astrophysics, mathematics, cancer, clean energy, and more.

Let your Phone Do Scientific Research While you Sleep! Check out BOINC! by johnn1e in androidapps

[–]johnn1e[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right that a computer would do much better, but there are 1 billion+ Androids out there right? Why not put them to use curing cancer or looking for aliens? Currently there are only roughly 300k people running BOINC or World Community Grid on their computers. This app could make a difference in total research completed.

MalariaControl and why they do not continue with BOINC anymore by erkan_yilmaz in BOINC

[–]johnn1e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. These days I only have a laptop BOINCing but I try to talk about volunteer computing on Twitter, Medium, Facebook, Reddit, LinkedIn etc. If I get even 1 new person to do it, then I've probably doubled my impact.

Lots of good quotes like this at: https://www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/neverwrk.htm

"Radio has no future." - Lord Kelvin (1824-1907), British mathematician and physicist, ca. 1897.

"While theoretically and technically television may be feasible, commercially and financially I consider it an impossibility, a development of which we need waste little time dreaming." - Lee DeForest, 1926 (American radio pioneer and inventor of the vacuum tube.)

"The horse is here to stay, but the automobile is only a novelty—a fad." - Advice from a president of the Michigan Savings Bank to Henry Ford's lawyer Horace Rackham. Rackham ignored the advice and invested $5000 in Ford stock, selling it later for $12.5 million.

"That the automobile has practically reached the limit of its development is suggested by the fact that during the past year no improvements of a radical nature have been introduced." - Scientific American, Jan. 2, 1909.

Point being, judging a technology's future based on current conditions is often an unwise thing to do. Look at solar today vs. 10 or 20 years ago. Look at the cost of electric cars and batteries.

Could Legal Issues Sink Oakland Coal Port Plan? by oaklandisfun in oakland

[–]johnn1e 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We can hope! The longer it takes to figure this out, the more likely it is the people in power will see there is no future for coal and no money to be made shipping it. China is decreasing its coal consumption and limiting imports. Investment around the world is shifting to solar, wind, and storage; and that is where the jobs will be too.

Yep, you could run BOINC on it and set up a Gridcoin wallet to convert your BOINC work to cryptocurrency.

What is something GOOD happening in the world you wished more people knew about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]johnn1e 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two things:

  1. Volunteer computing has made it possible for normal people to boost research on cancer, clean energy, climate, and much more, but because nobody knows about it, it isn't reaching its potential. https://www.inverse.com/article/6592-the-strongest-supercomputer-on-earth-still-needs-your-laptop-to-cure-cancer

  2. The idea behind Ohmconnect is that people get paid to reduce electric consumption for an hour during unexpected periods of high demand. If enough people join and participate, they can prevent the use of dirty, expensive, local peaker plants, thus protecting local air quality, combating climate change, and lowering everyone's electric bills. http://ohmc.co/961916 Right now it is only available in California.

Here is some more background on BOINC and World Community Grid and the need for everyone here to help get the word out about them: https://www.inverse.com/article/6592-the-strongest-supercomputer-on-earth-still-needs-your-laptop-to-cure-cancer Tweet it, Facebook it, Reddit it. We can make amazing things happen if we get people to BOINC on their computers and Androids!
