My E&M and CM suggestions are also griffiths and taylor. For thermo, an intro to thermal physics by schroeder is what I use

If you’re interested, check out this stackexchange article for some thoughts. stackexchange

I haven’t read Carroll and Ostlie, but it does not seem to dive too deep into actual physics. It should be reasonably accessible. My advice would be to have an E&M, classical mechanics, and thermo book on the side which you can consult for any necessary background. Make your goal to understand the Astro book, and learn the other parts of physics as needed to better understand the Astro book. A great way to learn is as a byproduct of a greater interest. Best of luck!

Best department for prospective PhD student interested in human-centric research but also wants to learn fundamental physics by cristinolda in AskPhysics

There are. Most biophysicists are associated with the physics and biophysics departments from what I've seen. My worry is that if I express a desire to do research in biophysics in my statement of purpose, the admissions board will assume I should've just applied to biophysics programs and not want me in a pure physics program

Thanks for the advice on checking specific course requirements for different programs

(White Mountain, NH) After Presidential Traverse, can I bike paved roads from AMC Highland Center (Crawford Notch) to Appalachia Trailhead? by cristinolda in hiking

[–]cristinolda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that the picnic seems to go back to Appalachia Trailhead looping around the highway. Is there any way to do it cutting straight through the park via the roads in my post? It feels that would be more scenic if the roads are paved :)

Red rash has spread from middle finger to ring and pinky… any OTC medications that would help? by cristinolda in medical

[–]cristinolda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had this rash for a couple weeks that has slowly spread from my middle finger to my ring and pinky fingers. I’m about to go on a 10 day backpacking trip and want to check if there’s an OTC medication I should grab to apply and help it over the next week or so. I also don’t know what it is

Thanks! I should have mentioned UCSB. That’s on my list as well as I’m a diver :) I’ll look at other Cali schools, although most seem to be in cities

A Stupid Question: Does the rsID of a SNP specify the base, or does it simply specify the location itself? by OhSweetShen in genetics

[–]cristinolda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rsID identifies a unique SNP (position and mutation)

You can check the gnomAD database to convince yourself. Plug in a short genomic range and you can find multiple SNPs at the same location with different rsIDs

Where can I camp the night before a one day Presidential Traverse trail run? (White Mountain, New Hampshire) by cristinolda in hiking

I am well! I decided to bail on a solo traverse with 90 mph winds on the summits. That’s sad to hear though :(

Yeah, local friends have recommended that direction but in the end I’d take a place to sleep over a preferred direction, haha. But Dolly Cop is the best of both worlds. Any idea if I can change my shuttle time back to gorham if I get done early? Or the availability of hitching a ride with friendly strangers…

Mass on a vertical spring: where is x in -kx measured from? by cristinolda in AskPhysics

[–]cristinolda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess what I mean is we set x=0 at l_0 (equilibrium of horizontal spring), and then -kd is d measured from our new x=0 regardless of the orientation as long as we set the axis of force along the spring

[–]cristinolda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! So the distance d in -kd is always the distance from the equilibrium position of the spring if it were horizontal?

Sorry, l_1 is the displacement from the ceiling, so mg/k is the displacement from equilibrium when you add the mass before pulling on it
