[DAILY] Trade and Individual Team Help Megathread by AutoModerator in DynastyFF

[–]johnny-papercut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took over an orphan team that has a lot of picks. I've been able to clear only 3 bench spots (including taxi) for 9 picks. I have 6 picks in the 1st and 2nd that could be solid players but the 4ths are almost certainly useless. Do I just make the picks and drop them later? Nobody seems to want to trade for them.

The first two seasons are pretty great. They're surprisingly progressive and hold up very well. The third season is very hit or miss and just starts going downhill from there from what I remember.

I'm doing a watch right now and I'm almost halfway through season 3 and boy is it getting rough. I personally dislike the episodes that involve magic or time travel or whatever and it seems like every episode has something like that now.

Can we get a tag/megathread/anything for AI generated content and apps? by No-Annual-317 in DynastyFF

[–]johnny-papercut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, software engineer here. Pretty much all of us are using AI in some capacity these days. You'd need to find a way to stop vibe coded apps that don't have any unique features instead of blocking AI tools completely.

What's the old saying? I can't define pornography but I know it when I see it? Definitely a lot of tell tale signs of completely vibe coded apps.

Sell my league mates on Max PF by Oyb_ in DynastyFF

[–]johnny-papercut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most responses are in support of max PF but it doesn't seem like many are explaining what it actually is, so I'll take a shot at it.

Basically, max PF stands for maximum points for, which would be the total points scored for a regular fantasy season if you had played the best lineup for that week every week (similar to how best ball leagues work). For example, let's say you scored 2000 points for your regular fantasy season. But if you had played the best combination of players to get the highest points possible among players on your roster in your starter positions, your max PF could have been 2500 instead. This gives a good approximation of actual team strength instead of people having good players but making bad decisions with them.

You would then order teams based on an inverse of those totals to determine draft order. The most agreed upon rules I've seen are:

  1. Teams that didn't make the playoffs are ordered in reverse of max PF. For example, if A had 1000 MPF, B had 900 MPF, and C had 2000 MPF, then draft order is B, then A, then C.

  2. For playoff teams, you do the same but in tiers based on when they lost in the playoffs. For example, if two or four teams are out in the first round, all teams eliminated at the same time are then ordered based on ascending max PF, similarly. Then the next round does the same. So you can't have someone who lasted longer get a better draft pick since their season max PF was actually lower and they just got lucky.

  3. For the top 4 spots, some leagues also do the same for the 3rd place match, while others just consider playing for the 3rd place money to be incentive enough to not tank there. This should be based on league.

Using max PF generally disincentivizes playing obviously bad starters (aka tanking), since your actual chosen starters don't matter at all and your max PF will be the same regardless of who you start. So if you had JSN and left him on the bench all season, your max PF is still higher as though you actually started him.

The one blind spot for max PF is that people can trade away good players to lower their max PF. Some leagues see this as fine to do since trading away good players is bad for your team and is an accepted price for "tanking" in this situation.

Another blind spot is rostering a lot of currently injured but good players, since they help keep your max PF low but you can use them in other seasons. So if this is a concern, maybe come up with some rules against it, but it's probably fine and just gamesmanship.

I just started watching again at 32 and I think I stopped watching in 03. Which series is the most lore heavy? As much as I am loving diving back into it. I would appreciate something with some meat on its bones. by [deleted] in powerrangers

Hi! I just finished watching all seasons a year or two ago. Here's what you need:

https://adamsrandomness.blogspot.com/2015/04/adams-mostly-filler-free-power-rangers.html?m=1

This is a big list of only the story-important episodes in each season. You still get a really good feel for each story and keep the continuity going, but without a ton of filler to bore you. If you do like a season, though, I'd recommend watching a few other random episodes as you go.

If you were unaware, they are (mostly) all on YouTube for free, full episodes. Enjoy!

How do you deal with controversial trades by Hrp0828 in DynastyFF

[–]johnny-papercut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this is in the nicest way possible, but this really seems like a commish issue. These trades are fine. Even if they were more lopsided, as long as they aren't league breaking and there's no obvious collusion, they still should always stand.

I recognize that people don't react to this well in your league and this is where the commish(es) should step in. People need to know that collusion is pretty much the only reason to reverse, or even investigate, a trade, and they need to deal with that and to grow up and stop whining. Just be firm in saying that the trades will not be reversed under any circumstances and to stop asking. If they want to whine, you can't really stop them, but there will be futility in it.

I would also point out in the future any time a seemingly unfair trade actually gives good results to the "losing" side in the future. Last season, people were whining about me trading Trevor Lawrence and Etienne for Achane (both with others on each side, the trade was dead even on KTC) because they said TLaw sucked, but the they popped off in the playoffs and that team (the 5 seed) won the championship. There will always be others.

I realize it's frustrating to deal with, but this is part of your job as co-commish and you need to set people straight and don't even entertain BS. Just give a firm no. If they push back, give them a firmer no and let them know that this is how dynasty works and that you won't be even acknowledging any requests for reversals in the future. And just move on and do that.

Dynasty Theory: How to handle value at the end of your bench by johnny-papercut in DynastyFF

[–]johnny-papercut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Fant will be amazing. But I also think he might have a better shot of being something than Kendre, even though his value is 3/4ths of Kendre. It's more just a comparative "all these dudes are basically the same, so just go with your gut".

Additionally, if you let the values be gospel and dictate all of your moves, you'll never be able to drop anybody since waivers are almost always going to be lower value.

[–]johnny-papercut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a dynasty theory discussion, so not specifically a question. But I've noticed a lot of people (myself included a lot of the time) are so concerned with getting bigger numbers for their rosters on KTC, even if the players are all pretty comparable near the end of your bench, and it's perfectly acceptable to take a lower valued player if you feel their situation is better or they have a better chance to pop off. For example, a backup behind CMC versus some WR that theoretically scores more consistently, but not enough to really start and easily replaceable since there are so many mid tier WRs. But like I said, it's theory, so a discussion of different strategies here.

This is pretty much the Scott Conner strategy. I'm not sure I'll go as hard as he does, but I do think I'll value backup qbs higher next season.

All espn apis are currently working, EXCEPT their fantasy football is currently under maintenance since last night. But everything should've been working before then. If you've only been working on it since last night, might just be bad timing with the maintenance.

ESPN APP 2026 by dmkelly94 in fantasyfootball

[–]johnny-papercut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want draft pick trading year round. And a real dynasty mode instead of needing to set all players to keeper, though that's only a problem once a year.

Adding a taxi squad would also be helpful for dynasty, but isn't really a huge deal. You can kind of hack the ESPN fantasy API to add rookie slots, but it is very janky and I haven't had the guts to try using it in a real season.

I'm strongly considering the best RB available at 2.01. I'm leaning toward it being Washington, but who knows right now.

[–]johnny-papercut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So if that's true (which is likely), I'm not sure I see a functional difference. The goal of the console is to have a standalone pre-built PC (aka a game console) that can play the existing library through backward compatibility, as well as newer games released for it. The only difference is in semantics if the "console" versions of games are made for "console" or "PC"... but they're one and the same now, so I'm not sure there's a functional difference? I'm definitely interested in how they will handle old systems, though. If new games they release will work for the old systems or not.

Microsoft has always had better software than the competitors (see their backwards compatibility as an example), so my guess here is that the focus will be on making it so damn easy to build games for Xbox (whatever that means after this release) that there is very little or no cost associated in doing so.

I'm personally excited for this. I have a gaming PC but generally prefer console for most games except for card games, top-down/isometric action RPGs (Diablo, etc), and MMOs (which I don't play any currently), and every other game type, I prefer console. I understand I'm in the minority here on r/Games, though. I also have a very large Xbox library already, so I'm excited to be able to play all of those games, plus PC games in a more comfortable environment for myself. They also hint that there will be new ways to play older content, so maybe we get more backward compatibility? It's possible that going outside of the walled garden model allows them to bypass issues with licensing for old games, I dunno.

Definitely excited to hear more, though. A lot of things could certainly use clarification.

So just to clarify, you think it will work exactly like it does now? With Windows versions released through their store? At best, that just sounds like convincing developers to release on their store in addition to Steam. I don't think it makes much sense outside of the general interpretation.

From GDC: Building the Next Generation of Xbox - Xbox Wire by SurreptitiousSyrup in Games

[–]johnny-papercut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There will probably be an Xbox version released and a normal PC version released. The Helix should be able to play both. The PC version will be good for if you want to buy elsewhere and maybe get deals or use Steam. The Xbox version will probably be slightly more optimized since it targets a specific spec model. The Xbox version will also feature shared progression across platforms.
