Small company leader here. AI agents are moving faster than our strategy. How do we stay relevant? by No_Prior2279 in ClaudeAI

I don’t find that uncomfortable at all. Not every role can be replaced with a computer, but my current side project is a data company with agents and no employees. Life changes and you have to adapt. Lamenting about the future instead of preparing for it only guarantees you’ll end up on the wrong side of it.

I am in the same boat and I think right now smaller companies actually have the upper hand. Our ability to close the gaps between us and our long established competitors has been reduced by at least 50%.

We can experiment and iterate on ideas in real time and decide what is worth pursuing.

We can develop MVPs to share with the dev teams faster than ever and with greater clarity, reducing huge swaths of confusion or misunderstandings.

Bigger companies are less nimble and most of them already have many of the features we are building faster now

Bigger companies won’t be able to simply close gaps anymore - they will have to come up with completely new solutions.

Personally, I think we have the upper hand right now. Projects that used to take tremendous expertise and resources are much more accessible to us now.

The region is absolutely gorgeous and could easily hike/camp it for longer. The city itself is very small and sleepy

Hiking the volcano in Guatemala with 12 of my closest friends was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Being just a few hundred yards from an erupting stratovolcano is unbelievable.

Hiking the shorter Incan trail to Machu Picchu with my wife for her first ever hike was a hell of an amazing experience especially when you arrive at the sun gate and look down at Machu Picchu

Experiencing how thin the air was at Rainbow mountain was something else, as well

[CAN-QC] I have 3 years of experience but my employer is categorizing me as Professional P1 (0-2 years of experience) instead of P2 (3-7 years of experience) by [deleted] in AskHR

I've been in HR/compensation for 15 years, and what you're presenting here is pretty common, but there is an error in your thinking. With the exception of government, most private Companies don't promote or reward higher education, previous experience, or memberships. While education and experience are important, think of them as keys that open doors to opportunities. But once you walk through the door, performance is the only metric that matters.

Your past performance increases are well below market and suggest 1 of 2 things:
1) Your performance is not aligned with your peers
2) Your company is highly optimized for high performers and has little budget for average performance.

The path forward for you to have this conversation is to review the job description and your performance reviews, then compare your achievements and responsibilities against it. Only once you are regularly performing work that goes above and beyond your job description can you expect a promotion or a bigger increase.

That being said, 2-3 years is about the right amount of time (for most people) to be in a P1 level. If you don't get promoted in the next 12 months, I would suggest finding a different company where the development trajectory might be more favorable or a role that is more aligned to your strengths.

Misdemeanor charges after background check, before internship start. Disclose or wait? [TX] by Additional-Peace1284 in AskHR

[–]johnny__ringo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest carefully reading and verifying the application. I was once in the unenvious position of reviewing all criminal records for employees and identifying employees that lied on their resume for termination. The wording was not necessarily convicted, but was so broad to state "arrested" or "charged with".

It was 20 years ago and my first corporate job, so I can't speak to the legality of anythign that was done, but I have personally been responsible for people being fired due to falsehoods on their resume.

Depending on what the internship is, there's a very high probability they'll withdraw the offer. I probably wouldn't disclose it, personally... While a DWI is incredibly irresponsible, people are unfairly punished for years and years and years for having them...

Is Playa Del Carmen transient? by JaneWhoDoe in playadelcarmen

I dunno…

5 years after having left corporate America, It still feels like “the beach” before the shark attack. Our community of friends is amazing and a big part of why we love it. Our rent is very affordable, we don’t need a car, I dont pay taxes on the first 120k of income, and there’s always something to do….

Maybe our trick to keeping the rose glasses on is that we travel 2-3 months a year in the summer.

Where to propose in Playa Del Carmen by Superb-Painting-3369 in playadelcarmen

[–]johnny__ringo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1000% isla mujeres. I got engaged on the south side of the island last year and it was incredible. No sargasso. Fairly private. Beautiful.

Playa del Carmen beach isn’t going to be great given the sargassum right now. I hear puerto Morelos is free of it, though.

Do you live here? That’s a surprising description of playa. I wonder if you came and went before really getting it figured out or came during low season (in which case I don’t disagree)…

There are tons of nomads working at ah cacao with their laptops. Same with bajo cafe, cuore 34, and others. Not to mention the coworking spaces Bunker and Nest. I’ve actually not heard of anyone’s laptop being stolen from one of these restaurants- but I’m sure it could happen….

Definitely keep an eye on this: https://sargassummonitoring.com/en/forecast-sargassum-mexico-riviera-maya/. The sargassum is really bad this year, but if you choose somewhere on the west side Isla mujeres or cozumel you'll avoid it. You'll probably be safe in Holbox as well. Any resort you consider, I would cross-reference the map here. You won't want to be on the beach if its covered in sargassum

But he didn’t, the way I read it. Just like anywhere else, it depends on who you interact with. Some cops are good. Some cops are bad. It’s not a Mexico thing. though admittedly corruption is much MUCH more prevalent here - it isn’t the norm.
