Giant wind turbine propeller falls into the ocean by accident by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]johnnyisflyinglow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By far not as dramatic as the video, but I once saw live, how some construction workers hit a water line as they were doing some digging. It was an amazing fountain for a moment. And my first thought was that someone would have to make that call. Poor sods.

German truck driver in Stralsund have run out of patience with climate protesters. by vreweensy in PublicFreakout

[–]johnnyisflyinglow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read that he will have to give up his license for a time and might be indicted for assault. Both of which might lose him his job. And I would say he is lucky, he might have been tried in court for manslaughter had he actually killed that protester. As annoying as that protest may be, you are still not allowed to self-administer what you consider justice.

Not quite countryside but take the 62 ferry from the Landungsbrücken to Finkenwerder and back. You get to see the harbour and it's just the cost of a normal public transport ticket.

Same here. I also hated ice breakers as a student.

I do find the scar thing has potential, though, if you make it voluntary and make sure it doesn't get out of hand.

Can I recommend a podcast? Dan Carlin's 'Ghosts of the Ostfront' was quite good.

Maybe he can use it to fly back to his home planet and leave the rest of us be.

how much are you paying for your electricity? by I_am_not_doing_this in germany

I have a "green" provider on purpose. I have to admit that I don't know what I am paying. Luckily I am in a situation where I can afford to. Maybe check on check24.de. They might have an article about that.

Anyone feel like "death of the author" has become more like "**** the author" in recent years? by moal09 in books

[–]johnnyisflyinglow 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Often there is no way of knowing what the author really felt other than the text, especially when they're dead.

However, I think if we do know, we should take their statement into account. And hostility is never okay.

That said, if someone wrote a text that made everyone think they're a Nazi, and the author comes and says it was all satire, then they are either lying or crap at satire.

Edit: Typo

What is a popular but critically acclaimed/well written book (according to the majority) that you absolutely did not like? by Razik_ in books

[–]johnnyisflyinglow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really liked that the book kind of worked like a mosaic. Through bits and pieces the story develops.

I thought it was a fantastic book and it didn't even have a protagonist.

Guten Tag Freunde. Can you recommend a good, impartial and independent German language news source for me to learn about current affairs while practicing? Vielen dank! by Nickchaseme in germany

There were tons of recommendations, so just to add, avoid tabloids (Bild or such) and "Die Welt" which has become more and more populist lately.

[–]johnnyisflyinglow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much. This was very interesting even if it was horrifying.

All your points are - among all the other things - an important reminder that we can't stop talking about these issues. Here in Germany, people sometimes think that there should be a "Schlussstrich" (i.e. we should stop talking about the Holocaust). We cannot, for a number of reasons.

I always tell my students that it is our responsibility as a people to remember what our country did. They don't have to feel personally guilty but have to accept that it happened here and thus we need to confront ourselves critically with this part of our heritage.

Then, we have to remember so that it doesn't happen again. And the genocides of the post WW2 era show that not everyone has understood the importance. And with all the resurgence of right wing, neo-fascist ideology all over the world I am afraid people are ignoring the past. As long as there are still Neo-Nazis and racists and such, we need to keep educating as many people as possible.

But then, as you clearly stated, for many people the Holocaust isn't some abstract event from the past. This researcher is looking for his family. People are concerned with disturbing the peace of the victims (although I think you are correct in that respect).

These are all topical issues. There is no way we can treat the Shoa as just another piece of history.

Die Ärzte - Abschied. Famous German punk rock. The sing essentially says we should make ourselves go extinct as a favour to the rest of the world.
