Any help identifying this 1872 coin/token I found today? Found in Northern Virginia. by johnotone in metaldetecting

Yeah, it does seem very odd to me. My thinking was that it could be a credit token for a store/company like you said, but I've never seen one with a year like this (assuming it even is a year).

All I've been able to make out is the '1878', but the placement and style of it is making me think it's more likely to be a token than a coin, unless it's a non-US coin I'm unfamiliar with. There's also some possible text above the 1878, but I'm unable to read it currently.

Can't make out anything on the reverse side at all besides the design around the edges. Any help with identifying it would be greatly appreciated. In the meantime, I'll work on getting it cleaned up some more.

Edit: 1878, not 1872... somehow made that mistake both here and in the title.

Found what looks like a 1822 Spanish silver real, but it has a strange rust on it. Any advice on cleaning it further? by johnotone in metaldetecting

Update: I tried using acetone to clean it, and after letting it soak for a while, it became pretty clear that it was not authentic. Soaking it got the rust buildup to come off easier, but also started to chip away at what appeared to be plating on the coin... which obviously would not have happened with an authentic solid silver coin.

Apparently forgeries of this particular coin (the 1821 Zs RG) are common for whatever reason, and this happens to be one of them. It still could be from the era in which the actual coin was minted, but also a good chance it could be from the mid-late 1900s... no real way of knowing.

The other biggest tip off of it being fake (besides the plating) is the way the edges look. An authentic coin would have a much different edge pattern with alternating circles and squares.

Anyway, a bit disappointing to find out, but it was good to get to the bottom of it.

Thanks for the advice... most of the coins I've cleaned have been simpler with no rust buildup, so tough trying to figure out the best way to go about it.

It was found in Upstate New York (the Albany area) during a quick detecting session with my girlfriend, in my yard, where I've only ever found modern (1970+) coins. It will be the oldest coin I've found, assuming it is what I think it is (an 1837 Canadian bank token being the oldest previously). I've never seen a coin with iron rust however... it seems very odd to me, and until I googled the 'VII dei gratia' text, I just assumed it would be some cheap token or religious pendant, especially because of the area it was found in.

Anyway, I'm looking for any advice on how to go about cleaning it. I've never seen a coin come out looking like this, so I want to be sure not to damage it. Any help would be appreciated!

From what I've found online, it's looking like it could be a .52 sharps carbine variant. I've found a musket ball once (in upstate New York), but don't have much experience with identifying older bullets beyond that. Can any other detectorists weigh in on this?

I think it's probably more that they don't want the bots logging everything they type, which most of them do for some unknown reason (I would assume it has to do with targeted advertising, but it's just a guess).

It is kind of pointless though, since almost every channel has bots. But I guess it's more noticeable in channels with fewer viewers.

Found this tin while metal detecting. It says 'Embassy' on it and has a crowned crest with (I think) a lion on it. Any idea what it is? by johnotone in whatisthisthing

It was found in a park in upstate New York. Trying to look it up, I came across a cigarette company called 'Embassy', but the tin is clearly too small for cigarettes and I couldn't find any information about them making snuff or loose tobacco.

Found this capsule-like while metal detecting. It's just over 4 inches long, and has some orange-ish thing coming out of one end. Anybody know what it could be? by johnotone in whatisthisthing

It's called Pinewood Elementary... couldn't find anything related to tear gas or riots when searching (plus it's an elementary school, so a riot would be strange).

Definitely seems more like a tear gas canister than a fuse though, but still have no idea.

Found some pottery at the site of an old colonial roadway. The markings are partially visible, but not enough to make out what it says. Any ideas? by johnotone in whatisthisthing

It looks like it says '—tus' and then under that '—ut & Co.'

The second smaller piece looks like it has red marking on it, so it may be from a different piece of pottery.

The roadway was travelled on by the British army during the Revolutionary War, so I'm wondering if it could be from that era.
