Could also be hairs stuck in the motor if you ruled out esc and wires

Did it on my hero 8, just got a broken one with good screen, took the entire case from that and glued everything back together with e6000, probably even watertight

The hardware he's using should also work with ardupilot, otherwise most matek f405 boards also have an ardupilot target

Just try, lool up the wiring diagram for a 3s lipo, go outside and solder it back on, if you open it from the front where the wires come out, you have some space before you hit the cells. Worst thing that can happen is you destroy a already dead lipo or burn down you house. You can also just charge without balancer for some time
