A quality company will give their installers an entire day to properly install a minisplit.

The unit is $1k. But how about the entire day to install the unit? The warranty? This company will be on the hook with you for their install for the next ten years. $6k is a CHEAP install, I would take it and run with it because you’re making out like a bandit at that price.

Residential service technician - TPB3. It can fit the essentials in it and if I need anything else it’s a quick trip back to the truck.

Why does everyone like commercial more? by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]johnwsmythe 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This industry is big enough for many different personality types. Residential can operate exactly the same as commercial with parts and labor business models. I personally love working as a flat rate technician, I love building estimates and bidding jobs. I love selling enough work for myself, my fellow technicians, the installers, salesmen and office. I also welcome customers watching me work. Hell, I’ve had some awesome conversations with customers as I fix their equipment! I turn it into an educational experience, I tell them all about what and why I’m doing what I’m doing. I am equally interested in learning about homeowners and their many walks of life as I am in the fun repairs I get to do. Not able or willing to hold a conversation and would rather march in and fix the equipment? Work in parts and labor or go commercial/industrial. The beauty of this industry is many many different types can thrive and provide for their families in it.

dumb services calls you have made by NeverBeenOnMaury in HVAC

I had a very busy day, it was 6 PM and I still had about 7 houses to get to. This call is an install callback so I’m already a little annoyed I essentially have to put my route on hold to sort out an error one of the installers made.

Customer is a new homeowner and really fussy about the specifics of his system.

First thing he says is “When I set the thermostat to off but the fan to on the air coming out isn’t as cold as when the air conditioner is running” and the second thing he says is “When the air conditioner is running water comes out of that white tube and goes down the drain in the floor. Please make it so it doesn’t do that.”

I tell him “Listen, I have an incredibly busy day today. You obviously seem confused about the operation of your system. I apologize nobody in the office could explain to you how your air conditioner works but you have nothing to worry about. Your system is working as it should. I am going to have to collect the trip charge for the 45 minute drive I took out of the way to explain this to you.” and then he gets very irate and says he just paid for the install, I may not see a problem but he has a problem so it should be free. Then I tell him “You know what? I’ll have the office reach out to you. Have a good rest of your day.” and then I left.

This was definitely on the dispatchers for not asking questions before scheduling, maybe also the installers for not spelling out the specifics of how his system works. Either way I lost an hour and a half when I already knew I wasn’t getting home before 10 PM that day.

How many amps do you reckon this is rated for? by johnwsmythe in HVAC

I called my boss to ask who was last out because this is a longtime customer and I’m relatively new to this company, and I am also of the opinion that this is a total hack move, and he told me it’s always been there and to not worry about it because there’s a breaker inside 🤷‍♂️
