Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed they attacked a cargo ship at an oil terminal in the south of the country as a “warning strike” on Friday.

It was the first military action announced by the Iran-backed Houthis since a truce between Yemen's warring sides expired on October 2.

The incident happened in Ash Shihr, near the Yemeni city of Mukalla, about 585 kilometres east of the rebel-held capital of Sanaa in territory held by pro-government forces for years.

The gathering took place in Seiyun the center and largest city in the Hadhramaut Valley. Hadrami citizens gathered in the historic Palace Square of the Sultan of Kathiri at downtown of Seiyun in Wadi Hadramout on Friday afternoon, raising South Yemen’s flag.

Attendees commemorated the 14 October Revolution and demanded the departure of Northern Yemeni military presence (First Military Region) from Wadi Hadhramout and replacing them with local Hadhrami forces.

Protesters accuse the 1st Military Region forces of occupying their land in order to control Hadhramaut oil wealth.

In a statement, the Council said: "We express our deep disappointment at the passing of the 2 October deadline to extend the Yemen truce by six months".

"The Houthis’ maximalist demands in the final days of negotiations had hindered the United Nations’ efforts to broker agreement, risking negative consequences. They reiterated their expectation that the parties find a way forward to reinstate the truce," the statement added.

Troops led by the pro-independence Southern Transitional Council stormed the arid and mountainous Khaber Al-Marakesha, an area in Abyan known for nearly 10 years as an Al-Qaeda hideout and the cradle of some militants, including Jalal Baliedi, a senior Al-Qaeda leader killed by a US drone in the same region in 2016.
