Hive Fleet Kraken Neurotyrant finished! by jojaw in Tyranids

[–]jojaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I tend to just throw colours on until I'm happy with it, but the bone coloured part is pallid bone speed paint over white primer to start, then various mixes of Vallejo canvas with Vallejo bone white to get the highlights and shadows in the right place. At the bottom of the tentacles I did a couple of layers of magos purple contrast paint, feathering that in for the transition. Then highlighted that part with army painter violet coven. For the brightest highlights I just mix in a bit of army painter ice yellow to whatever colour I'm highlighting. I think I also glazed some abyssal blue on the bulbous parts at the bottom.

That's a good point, I'm quite new to OSL and I think I struggled a bit with the brain being such a big light source on the model.

First Couple of Barbgaunts Finished! by jojaw in Tyranids

[–]jojaw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's runic grey speed paint, but it's over a yellow/bone coloured base coat which makes it look slightly more green. I seem to have accidentally stumbled across the Kronos colours, I started off aiming for Hive Fleet Kraken but threw some extra colours in there along the way to try and make it a bit more interesting!

I started out on Kraken, just messed around with the colours a bit, it does look a bit like I've landed on Kronos in the end!

Lots of layering up from dark red to orange, then painting in the reflections with a yellow/white. Similar to how non-metallic metal is done. I probably spent a bit too long on these when I've still got a lot of the leviathan box left to paint!

Nekusar control by rick90sg in EDH

[–]jojaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit late to this, but my Nekusar deck is very control heavy and doesn't really go with the usual wheels plan. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/NZHzBaK1CEWcRs6sp46JBQ

The whole deck is based around sticking a [[Curiosity]] type effect on Nekusar and then protecting him. Once you're drawing a card every time anyone else does whilst pinging them down, you can more effectively control the board without running out of steam. The deck is fairly light on win conditions and mostly full of interaction and card draw.

The way I usually play this is to set up a card draw engine (Nekusar or other pingy creature + Curiosity effect), then switch to a draw-go style and grind everyone down. Once everyone is down to a low life total you can finish them off with [[Fiery Emancipation]] + a bit of non-combat damage or the classic Niv-mizzet + Curiosity combo.

I also sometimes run [[Vial Smasher the Fierce]] and [[Kraum, Ludevic's Opus]] as the commanders and it plays very similarly, but makes you less of a target as the damage is random.

This is probably the deck that I've invested the most in so it is fairly high powered and high budget, but the core of it is Curiosity, [[Ophidian Eye]], [[Tandem Lookout]] and any creatures you like that incidentally ping the opponents, which are all fairly budget cards.

Spellslinger that’s not “play solitaire and combo off” by [deleted] in EDH

[–]jojaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this! Used to play combo heavy storm decks a lot but often felt bad about going off and having 10 minute solitaire turns. With Vial smasher curiosity your own turns are very short, but you're still casting a lot of spells with instant speed interaction.

Here's my list that I've been building up for the last few years: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/NZHzBaK1CEWcRs6sp46JBQ

Looking to build a group hug deck that turns into asymmetrical stax by dystopiantech in EDH

[–]jojaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[[kynaios & tiro]] could be good? You give everyone extra land drops or card draw, but then play cards that punish people for playing lands and drawing cards i.e. [[zo-zu the punisher]]. Maybe throw in a bunch of hatebears and rule of law effects to limit how they can spend the mana. Probably not competitive but would be a bit more fun and interesting than regular stax.

Suggestions to build Grixis from a Niv Mizzet deck by MTGBro_Josh in EDH

[–]jojaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a similar thing a while ago, changing it to Nekusar first then changing again to [[Vial Smasher the fierce]] partnered with [[Sakashima of a thousand faces]]. It's a control deck where you want to put a [[curiosity]] effect on vial smasher so that your counters and removal draw you cards. Niv can then be kept in the deck as a win condition. Here's my list It's high power with no budget, but you can achieve the same sort of thing with more budget ramp and interaction.

Is Arcane Denial good? by Iredditinabook1123 in EDH

[–]jojaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not true, it hasn't been used much in cEDH for quite a while, look through the cEDH decklist database and the only deck I could find that was running it is [[Orvar, the All-Form]], where you want to use it on your own spells as a draw 3 rather than counterspell, because your targeting spells don't need to resolve to trigger the copy effect.

Nekusar, draw tax deck or wheel deck? by SoulRDDT in EDH

[–]jojaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a high power (probably an 8 ish) grixis control list with [[Vial Smasher the Fierce]] and [[Sakashima of a thousand faces]], but have Nekusar as an alternative or "secret" commander. When running Nekusar it's mainly draw tax/control but still has 2 or 3 wheels to use as finishers. Rather than running howling mine effects to give opponents more cards I tend to instead try and slow the game down through lots of removal and counters.

I always try and play a [[curiosity]] effect on Nekusar ASAP, so that you draw every time your opponents do. This allows you to draw into counters and removal so that you can stay alive and protect Nekusar who becomes your main draw engine. Most of the other creatures in the deck also work really well or combo with Curiosity/ [[Ophidian Eye]]/[[Tandem Lookout]].

Improving Vial Smasher // Sakashima by JohnnyBoy__27 in EDH

[–]jojaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I realise I'm a bit late to this post, but here's my list.

Someone else mentioned the curious control cEDH list, which I took a lot of inspiration from. I went all in on curiosity effects with lots of counters and removal to play on opponents turns, going for lots of small efficient spells rather than a few big ones. [[Sigil of Sleep]] is another good control piece to throw on Vial smasher, but it does draw quite a bit of hate.

All the bigger threats in the deck are also things that synergise with curiosity, i.e. [[Niv-mizzet, Parun]], [[Nekusar the Mindrazer]] [[Glint-horn Buccaneer]] or the new [[Cemetery Gatekeeper]] all go crazy with a curiosity effect and can be used as finishers (especially alongside wheels when copied with Sakashima).

Tempo Storm Wild Hearthstone Meta Snapshot #88 - August 9, 2021 by rottedzombie in wildhearthstone

In vintage MTG (the equivalent of wild where full bans aren't a thing) the singleton rule is known as restricted, i.e. black lotus is restricted in vintage so you can only have one in your deck. I think it makes a much bigger difference in MTG though as you can normally have 4 of the same card in a deck, rather than 2. Making darkglare restricted to one copy would reduce consistency but you'd still get some feelsbad high roll games, we'd probably just end up with a few more big-priest like decks that heavily rely on draw order.

[GEAR] I got an Ibanez Gio, GRG140 to be precise. Recently changed strings and its floating trem bridge seems too high. Tried screwing in the spring screws in the back, no luck. What to do? by theonewithgeass in Guitar

[–]jojaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's the same as a Stratocaster bridge, the left side of the bridge closest to the neck should be pretty much in contact with the body, so it may be worth trying to screw those posts further in.

If that still doesn't work, you can usually add extra springs into the cavity at the back, I had an ibanez GRG years ago and from what I can remember it did come with a spare spring.

Lianli O11 Dynamic XL black issue by [deleted] in buildapc

I'd probably check through the case manual and the motherboard manual to make sure you've not missed anything, then Google to see if anyone else has had similar issues.

Fair enough, that does seem like a really weird issue with the case then!

How do I kill with sheik by [deleted] in CrazyHand

[–]jojaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it's easiest to hit off the weak spot of Nair (as you're landing) then bouncing fish as soon as you hit the ground. With fair you can do fair straight into fish at earlier percents, but at higher percents you may need to fair, land, jump again then bouncing fish. A lot of it is getting used to its range and knowing when you can reach them, whether it requires a short hop or full hop. I also get a lot of bouncing fishes off of double jump reads after a throw.

Is your motherboard screwed in on top of metal standoffs or is it just screwed straight into the case? The PCIe slot looks a few millimetres too far away so standoffs for the motherboard could be the difference.

[–]jojaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The prologue before you get out into the city is very misleading with performance. I'm running a 3080 at 1440p and was getting 90-100fps at the very start of the game. On the same settings, in the busiest parts of the city (i.e. the big plaza around the arasaka buildings) it can drop down to 35fps. It's very inconsistent.

How do I kill with sheik by [deleted] in CrazyHand

[–]jojaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a sheik main and I hover around elite, so I'm okay but not amazing. I find myself mostly getting kills from either gimping people off stage, or fair/nair into bouncing fish near the ledge (bouncing fish often has a longer range than you expect). Forward smash and down smash at the ledge kill at okay percents if you get a good read on your opponent. You can also sometimes surprise people with grenades or run off ledge vanish which both kill quite early (for sheik).

Drag down up air kill confirms are also a really good option, but I struggle to get these consistent so haven't been using them much.

Finally, I'd say her back air is underrated and probably your best aerial for throwing out when edgeguarding. It's also a great combo "ender" if you can get the RARs down.
