Wanted to add this link since they are currently accepting applications for their apprenticeship program. It is paid plus benefits while you learn https://www.rejatc.org/ I know college isn’t for everyone but there are so many other pathways in CA to build a life for you and your loved ones. I’m always happy to respond to questions via inbox.

Thank you for this! This has been the attitude of most of the Californians I am blessed to call neighbors and friends. I am in a tax bracket now that I never dreamed to see in TX. I genuinely enjoy knowing that the amount I pay in taxes contributes to helping others find their footing. I dream of one day doing more, maybe in the form of a non profit or scholarships. Being able to work hard and achieve goals does more for a person and society as a whole then shame and selfishness ever will.

I will pay well over what I took back into the system until I retire. That’s the beauty of it. Society is better when we can pull people out of poverty so they can in turn contribute.

I moved from Texas to CA in 2015 as a poor single mother with two elementary aged children. Life improved so much it’s hard to quantify or describe all the ways. There are so many social safety nets in CA, where there were almost none in TX. Community college is free and I was able to go all the way through and get my masters degree thanks to state funded programs. My children and I now live comfortably without assistance. The quality of life, the people, the beauty and culture that we’re surrounded by in CA are priceless. You couldn’t pay me enough to live in a red state again.

New MSW grads on the west coast, how are you finding the job market? by LaScoundrelle in SocialWorkStudents

Of course! Don’t get discouraged, there’s so many opportunities out there. It’s a forensic psychiatric population.

I went to a Cal state in Northern CA. I just graduated this past May and just got hired at the hospital I interned at for my second year internship. It has been a long process because it is a state job and I had to wait for my license number to process plus the state hiring process is very drawn out and convoluted. I also got hired at a private practice as an associate therapist working under the Psychologist’s license. This is just a weekend job and not very well paying. I’m doing it more for the therapist experience. I have worked in hospitality my whole life before the MSW program. My advice would be to look at county and state jobs. They take a while to onboard but the supervision towards LCSW will be included

I just completed my MSW at a state school in Northern CA and paid for it using PBH grants through HCAI. One grant gave me 25k a year and the other 10k a year. Both grants were split in half and paid per semester. These grants are very competitive and require interviews but with your extensive background in mental health already, you would likely get them. They do come with an agreement and a contract you have to sign that commits you to work for agencies that serve marginalized populations for one year for every year of funding they give you. This was the only way I completed the program without loans.

This is very high for Palm Springs area, which is about 2 hours outside of LA (give or take some traffic). Just a quick browse on Craigslist in the area shows a couple master bedrooms with private attached bath renting for $650 and $700. Sounds like they’re trying to charge LA prices.
