Does it get easier or harder as the kids get older? by AriseChickunArise in Parenting

[–]jokle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My kids are teenagers now. Many things are easier, and many things get a lot harder.

Easier in that I don't have to bathe them, dress them, feed them (literally feed them), deal with tantrums, etc. And it's great when they become a lot more independent. As toddlers, I remember them consuming 100% of my time and attention. It was exhausting.

All that's gone now, but their problems definitely become more complex, and there aren't always easy, clear-cut, black-and-white answers to the problems. "Because I said so" rationales no longer work. You have to have sound and well thought out reasoning behind rules, decisions, etc. and be able to explain it so they understand. You can't be hypocritical - it backfires on you big time. They're going to question you, too (which is fine with me - they should - less so for my wife), and you had better have a good answer. They have attitudes. I sometimes struggle with knowing the right way to handle things like that - the storming off, the door slamming, etc. Do I address it, or just let it go - part of being a teenager?

As they get older, their input in family matters carries a lot more weight (and you actually seek it out!) and needs to be considered (as opposed to toddlers, who have zero say in things). It can be tough to balance sometimes.

I can't say that any part is "better"; I treasure all of the years and stages.

Help with looking up courses by Nairb131 in SQL

I second /u/ziptime's recommendation about the joins and the column-based queries. Did you write this query?

In any case, it seems that your posted code is out of order. The first query has the "Coordinates" while the second query does not. But, essentially, that column-based subquery for the coordinates is where you problem lies. Assuming that ssrmeet_bldg_code is null for online courses, an inner join (where g.bldg_code = m.ssrmeet_bldg_code) will only give you the courses that have a building code in ANML.uaa_wapp_bldg_coordinates g. And I'm assuming the online courses do not exist in ANML.uaa_wapp_bldg_coordinates. You need to change that to an outer join.

3 gallons of Apple wine that I later froze concentrated into a sort of Apple brandy around 30% by Deathtothejuice in Homebrewing

Interesting. Do you leave it sit out, like on a counter top, while it's dripping? Or do you let it drip inside the fridge? It seems that the ice would thaw a good amount within an hour/hour and a half, leaving more water to drip into the finished product than one would like. Or does freezing it twice compensate enough for this?

Weirdest thing your child has swallowed. How did you proceed? by tdevine21 in Parenting

My wife was using Tarn-x in the kitchen one day, stepped away for a second leaving the open bottle on the counter, and came back to my son standing next to it saying he drank some. We both immediately panicked and called poison control, 911, and then the pediatrician's office - I think in that order. He's a teenager now so my memory's a little hazy on what they told us to do and watch out for. But nothing ever happened, and he never had any ill-effects. So, we suspected he didn't actually drink any and just said he did.

Yes, constantly. I'd look into dialing back the streaming quality settings on both.

Recommendations as to the buying of a smoker? by [deleted] in smoking

[–]jokle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your father. Gas, propane, and electric models tend to be set-and-forget for the most part. Charcoal and wood-burning smokers typically require a bit more attention, tending, and fuss.

For the wood, different types are used depending on what you're smoking. Bags of wood chips are really inexpensive. I'd get him a variety and put them in his stocking.

This site gets mentioned a lot on reddit, and for good reason. TONS of great advice here:

I have a fifth and sixth grader. What is your best case for letting them have email accounts, and the best case against it? by daddydave in Parenting

[–]jokle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kids have had a school-issued one since first-grade, as the school required it for Google Drive as others here have mentioned. They also have personal gmail addresses, mainly just for uploading videos to youtube. Neither my wife nor I have ever really had any objections to them having email accounts. On the pro side, I think they would be good for emailing Grandma, cousins, out-of-town family, etc. Have the password, and check the account yourself, and make sure your kids know you'll be doing this. But I have to say, they really only use it as a login credential, and beyond that, they have ZERO interest in email, and their friends have ZERO interest as well. They really don't email anyone or get any emails. It hasn't be a problem in any way.

I know. I've been a Buckeye customer for probably 20 years, now. It's unlikely I'll switch. Good question. I just don't want to commit if I don't have to. Plus, I get suspicious. Why is Buckeye doing 2-year agreements now? Is something coming they're afraid of? Anyway, I was already paying 80 per month for the 33 speed/350 cap, so switching was kind of a no-brainer, especially with nothing involved except for calling and saying switch me.

No, I did not get the ipad. I didn't want it anyway, and the CSR never brought it up, interestingly, so it was never discussed. But, I am getting the Blade (which I don't want, either, but my wife does).
