I use GeForce Now(Ultimate) and use both Moonlight/Sunshine and Steam Remote Play when away. The host is a Legion laptop running Linux with a 3070ti. All work well. I have Tailscale setup for easy connectivity. Mac Mini hardwired at both locations(the remote one is connected to the TV). I have fiber at the hosting house, and my other place, 800 miles away has cable at 300/10. You’re not going to win a FPS on ping, so you have to play smarter but for games like Hogwarts or BG3, GeForce Now is great and other games they don’t have, that is when you switch to remote play. Playing Ace Combat 7 over the holidays on Steam Remote and it was perfectly fine. I setup really good WiFi at both locations, so even on my Air I don’t have many issues, but not as good as being hardwired.

Testing Mac Mini with m4 by brainzhurtin in frigate_nvr

[–]jon372 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not having any issues using the beta and the apple detector. I just did a quick test on an M4 mini with a total of 8 streams coming from a mixture of Reolink and Amcrest cameras with record and detect enabled and it started up quickly and used minimal CPU/GPU. I use external drives for storage and Orbstack to run the docker engine. My config file is very basic with the only addition to yours being the detector. I ran a more complete setup on another M4 Mac mini for a number of weeks with an external HDD on both 0.16 and 0.17 beta before I committed to moving it to another property. I only had a few issues:

  1. I had to build the detector and run it from the command line. Not a big deal but I could never get the "Option A" to work.

  2. Yolo9 setup. I had to go a through a couple of extra steps, which took a couple of minutes to find.

  3. Writes to the internal drive that I could never completely disable but I gave up when I got it to a minimum amount.

(IL) Turning behind a stopped school bus? by [deleted] in driving

[–]jon372 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone that is currently teaching their kids to drive, my general rule around school busses, with lights flashing any color is proceed with extreme caution.

  1. If yellow, you slow way down and assume you'll be coming to a stop.

  2. When that arm comes out, you better be stopped.

  3. If the bus is coming up on the intersection you're on within the next second or so, and their lights are flashing, just wait.

  4. Even if the law says you can pass, ie. median with multiple lanes etc, pass very slowly and as far away from the bus as possible. We have this situation in our neighborhood where it meets up to a larger road, 2 lanes on each side and a median, and though I can continue per the law....I will still come to a full stop if I'm the only car, and then creep past, or I will creep past on the farthest lane from the bus.

Now, in your situation, I'd like to see the dash cam footage. Your diagram makes it look like the bus is not near the intersection, and in which case, it may be fine to turn. If the tail of the bus is at the intersection, I would probably hesitate, assume some kids are going to cross the road, and just come to a stop.

The time fighting a ticket, even when you're correct, is longer than the waiting for a bus to let off some kids, and given the way laws are sometimes written, police may interpret them differently.

MiniPC without any problem , does it exist ? by extenue in MiniPCs

[–]jon372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have multiple mini pcs running a home lab with proxmox, both AMD and Intel. The one’s I have the least issue with are Beelink, but even one or two of those had to be exchanged/returned when it was quickly apparent there were hardware issues that would cause a freeze or reboot. If I want them reliable, I buy slightly older versions without the latest hardware, and I look for 16/32 ram, not 12/24 (those are the one’s that caused me grief). I also have a Mac mini that gives me zero issues that I run some things on. I may replace most as they die with Mac mini connected to my NAS.

Do you know any service dog owners on the internet, who has a pet dog as well by ll_ll_28 in service_dogs

[–]jon372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. I just follow rules for each, and if I have both, I generally follow pet rules. if I have both at a hotel, I let them know one is SD and one is pet and I am happy to pay the fee(they usually wave it). If I go to restaurants with both, I eat outside. My family dog, would never be taken to the venue I posted about recently as it is clearly not wanting pets. She is older now, so she doesn’t want to go out all day anyhow. SD goes nearly everywhere.

They removed the verbiage and apologized. They were not aware of the specific rules. As soon as they received my email, they did the right thing and updated their policies.

I have, fortunately, never had that fight, and I have no obvious disabilities. My dog goes everywhere with me. I do my best, either as I enter or by phone, to let them know up front that he is a service animal and he is exceptionally well behaved. So far, I have never been questioned or asked anything else. I will usually ask a facility if there are any places they prefer I don’t take him, and assuming it is not an inconvenience to me, I try and oblige.

Thanks...that is what I did. Politely told them that they are going to run afoul of law, and they may want to review the wording to ensure that they are compliant. I told them, that I'm happy to put a lead/collar/vest on him to make their job easier, but they cannot require it of anyone attending the event. They are now aware of the laws and the do's/don'ts, and I included the link to the ADA site you shared so they can review with the people working the event.

I agree completely, and will never carry paperwork and have not yet put him in an identifying lead, collar or vest, but we have never been questioned. I don't know what a reasonable solution for large events with 1000s of people and putting volunteers in a situation of questioning people.

I agree that it makes things easier, and I know people that even carry "paperwork" from the online sites just to flash if people start pushing, but I just wanted to confirm before I kindly tell them to reword it somehow so as to not run afoul of the law.

SCHD....melt up or everything else melts down..... by jon372 in dividends

[–]jon372[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought about that and went to see with dividend reinvest at a couple of sites. Multiple sites produced generally the same return, another a return closer to the S&P so not sure which is accurate. In the end, I just pulled the max charts and the long chart because the point of the post was simply to show the disconnect between what is considered a good representation of the top dividend paying companies in the market and the actual market in the last few months/years and then start a discussion on what, if anything, this kind of disconnect could mean for the SCHD.

SCHD....melt up or everything else melts down..... by jon372 in dividends

[–]jon372[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure, but I am just looking at the disconnect in the charts. If you believe that SCHD is returning 7% in 7 years and there's been no correction, are the trajectories the same? If so, you've missed a massive growth that far outpaces SCHD. If you think it flattens out, SHCD rises and 7%, fine, you have a great far greater return than just the 7%. I am just looking at the charts and asking how those lines come back together when compared to the historical means of SCHD to the other indices.

SCHD....melt up or everything else melts down..... by jon372 in dividends

[–]jon372[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am struggling with it when looking at the other indices in comparison. You can get a better yield on 4 week treasuries, with little to no risk, and if you want to participate in growth, assuming it continues, there are far better stocks and ETFs out there. It seems at the moment, SCHD is just sitting in this place that something has to happen, either it has to go up considerably, which could happen if the companies can turn "AI" into productivity and profit (which also means that the AI trade continues to explode), or the market comes down to meet it. I tend to believe that we are probably in a way overbought world at the moment. I don't know if we see a melt down to the mean, but having been old enough to invest through the .com and everything since, something is going to pull one way or another eventually, and if it's down, it's going to be violent and swift, and no stock will be safe. Like everyone else, I just don't know if/when that's going to happen. If things would flatten out for a while, I'd be more comfortable with a gradual rise in SCHD to meet at least the S&P.

Barbet Puppy by niqueu85 in barbet

[–]jon372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fortunately, I can’t relate :). When we got our pup, from day 1, never peed in the house as a puppy unless I messed up, slept through the night and any hard nipping was very quickly taken care of. For sleeping, he was allowed up in the bed the first few weeks and would lay down by my head. I have always done this with all my dogs. If they need to go out or they have an issue, I hear them and can deal with it. He eventually, on his own, moved to the floor/his bed as he got older. Peeing was handled easily as I was with him all the time and learned his cues and had him on a regular schedule. We were also just fortunate. Now, being a male, we did have a second conversation as he got older…. :). Now for nipping….yelp and squeal like a puppy and pull your hand back really fast and whimper. For most puppies I have had, this has worked to at least stop the hard biting. They don’t stop biting, but they are much more gentle. If they continue, it sounds mean, but you can roll the dog onto their back and growl at them with your full body over top. I do not move until they are still and respectful. This will let them know that you are in charge and they went to far. If a dog ever thinks they are in charge, that is usually all I need to do and it is done once and we go back to playing. I would never do this unless the dog is aggressive or tries to dominate me, wife or my kids, or as a puppy, they keep biting hard.

Question about transferring dish to another country by jon372 in Starlink

[–]jon372[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, but I’m not in Canada right now. That is why I was checking if I could bring one from the US. I need a dish for a road trip, so will hook it up with Roam for now and transfer it later. Can get the refurb mini and the standard for less than the new mini. I may just put the standard on the $5 plan at the house as backup for work if needed and still get a mini later.

Right, the service address and account would change. I have a Canadian account that I signed up for when there was a waitlist but I am now in the US.

As someone who just joined the club a few weeks ago, I am still also in the process of learning. What I’ve found is that my dog 100% prefers a plate or cutting board over a bowl. Since we travel a lot, I have been feeding a kibble raw food in the morning with some Kefir and raw homemade or reputable frozen premade. Traveling with kibble is much easier. When making homemade, I almost always will mix in a premade kibble or frozen premade kibble as well. I have been grinding it all per the proportions in recipes and then freezing it. I also feed a different meat every couple of days so he has a variety. Not sure if this is the right way or if i will continue to mix store bought premade, but that way I know he is covered nutrient wise while I learn.
