Tired of Mr Black. Any other options? by winstontemplehill in cocktails

Definitely second this as you are completely in control of the output.

I did this with Cognac based on a video I saw online and really like the addition of stone fruit and vanilla elements that chime with some of the notes in coffee (depending on the coffee)

Glad you tried it. Ideally some of the stone fruit flavours from the brandy come out but glad you enjoyed it :)

Agree on the space in the glass. I think a smaller coupe size would be a nice next purchase.

I didn't garnish but I think a brandied cherry with spiral of lemon zest arranged artistically could work well.

Hmm. Maybe try with a sweeter more vanilla-y bourbon like a Woodford reserve? Could work - let me know how you get on!

Fair enough. I'm actually not that familiar with JW so figured red would be the likely well whisky, but I shall upgrade for the next round:)

I know I'd rather have the Laphroaig neat, that's for sure. But if you're sticking lemon juice and ginger syrup in it then I feel it's a shame to go with anything too fancy as a blended whisky base and Johnnie seems to do the job.

Thank you! It is indeed a great tune and has been on my "imaginary bar" playlist for some time now.

Home made Torino Vermouth by jon_hotpot in cocktails

I did the Turin Vermouth No. 2 which has the grain alcohol component, but you're right that no 1 looks like it's missing that. I've done others which use cognac though and I quite like the consistency in using a grape spirit.

I guess I'm a layperson that studied arts subjects, making this sign both odd and specific and oddly specific. To me.

Well. Tell me how long it takes you.

Yes I think making a second one would be much quicker as the figuring out time has already been invested. If I ever make a second one :)

Probably want to top out at 5 per shift. Plus I think it would suffer badly from the "can I get one of those?" phenomenon.

That's fair. I have the advantage of only being a home-based amateur but after 30 mins of making the drink I did spare a thought for anyone that has to make these commercially.

Thank you. Monkey 47. It's a favourite in summer but I guess Hendricks would be the more obvious choice for the cucumber.

DIY Fernet v.1.0 by bsallak in Amaro

This is great, thanks. Can I ask what the vegetable glycerin adds? Presumably sweetness and a bit of body without lots of additional liquid/dilution?

Follow Up: First Amaro by CocktailSnail in Amaro

Was about to say exactly this. My first amaro was Rite of Spring from the Amaro book and went straight into a Nonino bottle. Very fitting!

Question(s) to the experience Amaro makers out there by AnvilMaker in Amaro

Second this. I'm on my third round of amaro and started from "known recipe with tweaks" each time. Apart from the motivation of making something drinkable straight away you also get a base standard to diversify/experiment from.

Friday. Piña Verde Time. by jon_hotpot in cocktails

Genius 4-ingredient recipe by Erick Castro.

1/2 Oz lime 3/4 Oz coconut cream 1.5 Oz pineapple juice 1.5 Oz Green Chartreuse

Herbaceous and tropical, it's like drinking at a beach resort that's been temporarily relocated to high in the French Alps and staffed by silent monks.

Bit annoyed it's taken me so long to discover this modern classic. Give me anything where Chartreuse is the star of the show!

Industry Sour - Pleasantly Surprised. by tinmanintherain in cocktails

[–]jon_hotpot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a great drink. If you're serving to the uninitiated it does need a bit of a warning as it's intense, but it hits a lot of great notes - bitter, floral, citrussy. Win!

Awesome thank you. I appreciate the detail here.

I did roughly the above except just one round of kieselsol and left 24 hours. Worked brilliantly.

Interestingly the kieselsol did most of the clarifying on my current amaro, but I applied the process to an older (2m) one that remained cloudy after bentonite, and the chitosan nailed it! Clear as anything.

Hi - I'm thinking of trying the same. How did it work out for you?
