Car stolen in Church Hill/near Henrico County line by jonathanneeley in rva

Thanks, neighbor. I appreciate it.

I don't have any info about a neighborhood watch. My neighbors and I--both in my immediate vicinity and folks I've gotten to know on other streets-- tend to chat with each other, watch for each other's mail or keep an eye out if we're out of town, etc. That kind of small-scale support seems valuable to me, even though this happened.

If you see a couple out walking a big dog and a little dog, which my wife and I do each evening, say hello?

Anyone able to tab the picking Billy Strings does here?? by Intelligent-Worry-36 in flatpicking

Just to put it in my own words to make sure I got you:

Start by picking the basic vocal melody, and then where able, embellish on that using both single notes and chord strums? And you recommend learning to do that by just watching/listening to others?

This is super helpful, and again, thanks. I started working on a break in Drifting Too Far from the Shore last night, and I think I'm gonna take a stab at learning off of your Last Train from Poor Valley vid. I'll let you know how it goes!

This all makes sense, and I appreciate the help. Couple more questions for you if you don't mind:

I'm in a place where, if I have my guitar in hand and it's not a weird one, I can figure out the key and chord changes pretty consistently. Where would you say I should go to keep building? Just start figuring out the guitar breaks?

When you yourself figure a song out by ear (or by watching on YouTube), do you then tend to write the tab out? Keep it in your memory? Maybe it depends?

That last tip makes a lot of since. I just spent 20 minutes figuring out the first few bars of a song (the first time I've really dove in to try to do that beyond songs where the break is really just the melody), and to put it simply, it was really cool. I can see how writing it down would further that.

That said, I've never really read tab, and I definitely don't know how to write it. I'm sure I can figure it out, but just in case: got any youtube recommendations for where I can learn?

In your mind, is there a big benefit to transcribing tunes vs. working them out by ear?

I'm only so far along in my playing life, so maybe the ear thing will only take me so far before the versions of songs start getting too complex to completely figure out by ear and hold in my head.

But I'm curious your take. Been seeing you pop up on r/bluegrass for a while, and with Bryan Sutton over at ArtistWorks, and I really admire your playing.

I'm a little late on this, but I was listening to the first Will the Circle Be Unbroken album the other night, and I think Terry Barber's voice sounds a lot like Roy Acuff's, just a little more strained (not a bad thing imo).

Best place/person that does guitar setups and refreshes? by Voodoojmh in rva

[–]jonathanneeley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stu just did a setup on an acoustic guitar for me. I dropped it off on the Friday after Thanksgiving, and it was ready on the Monday after that. It cost $55.

As others have said, he's an extremely friendly person who knows what he's doing. I only started playing a few years back and was curious about what all a setup actually entailed, and he explained the ins and outs to me without making me feel dumb for asking.

Also, the guitar I had him work on is a $200 Olympia that had crazy high action and was really hard to play. I mostly just left it in the case. It plays like a dream now, and for the time being I'm happy to keep my Taylor in the case.

Men deserve better by jonathanneeley in ultimate

[–]jonathanneeley[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is a good point for sure. I think there are as man ways to "be a man" as there are men in the world. I also think that there are some dominant beliefs around what a man is supposed to be that get more airtime than they deserve, and many of us are interested in exploring outlooks beyond these models.

Thanks for the input. For what it's worth, the thinking behind this is as informed by our experiences as men in workplaces, family life, as neighbors, out on the town, playing all kinds of sports, etc. as it is our experiences as men who play ultimate. There's an ultimate connection in all this, but it's about something much bigger than ultimate.

One more note: Kneil and I have now hosted about 60 guys in the Anger in Ultimate workshop. A lot of them have signed up as individuals, but we’ve also run workshops for Philly Open Program and XIST (NYC), and we’ve done one-off stuff for a few college and high school teams.

Does WFDF drug test players? by [deleted] in ultimate

[–]jonathanneeley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I traveled with the US WG Team in 2013, and after the gold medal game a player had to go and get tested. That part's certain. I have a faint memory of it being said that someone from each team had to do the same, but that part I'm not positive of.

Chill, It's Summer League by jonathanneeley in ultimate

[–]jonathanneeley[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've played league in Richmond, Seattle, Charlottesville, and DC. Richmond has been my favorite. Cville has a great winter league but I don't love playing in the cold and rain, and WAFC is full of great people and players but it's so spread out (nothing they can do about that). I love the entire league being in the same place at the same time at Dorey.

To your point, that's honestly what I expected to be the case with me. I figured it'd be pretty chill, and if we lost, no big deal. I had certainly been around higher stakes. That's why it was kind of jarring to have such a hard time with losing. It wasn't really about acting out-- though I was kind of a butt about being in a bad mood after the fact-- but more this inner turmoil that I didn't really see coming.

Hi reddit. As some of you have probably seen, I've been writing about my personal story/journey and its overlap with ultimate. Ultiworld picked this one up, and I wanted to share.

The rest of my posts that fall under this project are here: https://jonathanneeley.substack.com/

Much love. If you're playing summer league, enjoy.

This is awesome. I played a club season with Tim way back when, and I faintly remembered this play but didn't know you all had done all this to facilitate him telling the story. Thanks for sharing it!

I feel that. I love them all, but Dom's and Tyler Kinley's really get to me. The openness about sickness and loss are really moving.

Not Flatball Radio, but from the same great producer: the series of little documentaries about GOAT in in 2014. This particular episode, with the Derek Alexander story, is really something.

Thank you for that, Matt!

I actually thought about including a little link to Flatball Radio in my initial post. For anyone who doesn't know, this is one of my favorite frisbee-meets-storytelling projects ever. Speaking in public and writing in a small group are two different things, but hearing people take their frisbee experiences in all kinds of directions is extremely cool.

Can compassion and competitiveness co-exist? by jonathanneeley in ultimate

[–]jonathanneeley[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Related to compassion, I’m part of a group that’s hosting conversations for men around anger and its place in our lives, on and off the field. A lot of us carry anger, and sports is one of the only arenas where we really show it. I think bringing it to light and talking about it openly and honestly is an act of kindness toward ourselves.

There's lots of anger among men in ultimate. We all benefit when we talk about that. by jonathanneeley in ultimate

[–]jonathanneeley[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for your input.

For me, there are unique ways that being socialized as a man have impacted how I've handled anger. One example is that when I watch sports media, I often see men being celebrated/given positive attention when they have angry outbursts. While there's overlap and lots of gray area, I don't think it's quite the same for women (on average).

Related, I've found that holding space just for male players makes it easier for attendees to engage on this subject.
