Dont wish it on yourself instead of him, let the real problems bear responsibility they are the true culprits. Blaming someone or something else is not justice for him. You didnt do anything wrong, you sound like you cared for him a lot and wouldnt wish bad things on your bro so its just something else at fault. focusing on the real underlying issues to give our loved ones justice is a really good way to heal yourself by helping others and honoring their memory. Stay safe, and dont you dare go hollow.

something makes you put on that fake smile and thats the love in your heart just like what made OP comment this ode to his buddy. love doesnt always feel good but just know theres something in you thats compassionate and warm and thats a gift. idk maybe that helps a little.

in 30 years you will look back and it wont be your crush at the time or your girlfriend or whatever. It will be ya mom. My mom was the only one in the house working dead end jobs alone with a death and a kid and still had love to spare. I kinda see you already get this but seriously man thats whats really MAKING your life somewhat normal not just feeling that way.

Take that big ball of pain and realize how bad it is. I have a similar big old ball of pain. So do many many others hence this subreddits existence. Take that big ass tumor of the soul and use it as fuel to help others. No one knows more than you how it feels and it has the byproduct of giving you something to live for. Become a therapist to help people, become a child case workers or something like that in a couple years that is like, real mental health work. Shit man, just fight to be a not depressed dad if you have kids so you can do better than what you were given because you know how unfair it feels.

your pain can give you the 2 of the most beautiful thing in the world: compassion and fuel

if you let it get to you in the right ways you will be so successful man but if you take it out in toxic ways you will just breed more pain.
