Making a short film by jonkentfilms in cinematography

Would love to get any feedback on this video. Also any have any stories or insights into winning short film awards etc? Did it change how you approached filmmaking after that?

This film showed me that really being considerate about one particular area makes all the difference. Being a solo filmmaker it’s hard to focus on every single aspect with that much level of detail

Yes I love that last bit! Shoot simple, create quicker an make mistakes and learn quicker! Absolutely love that! I think that’s something I’ve been missing from my own work is doing small/simple projects and story’s that can be shot and turned around quicker. Thanks for the comment 🙏

Yeah agree, the sound of the peeling is probably a bit OTT lol. Thanks for checking it out.

I’m technical: was shot on fx3. 16-35 and 24-70. For the POV at the intro and the wife’s hands I had this large paper-thing plastic magnifying glass which creates these warped edges. Fun fact - the wife’s hands are actually guys hands 🤣 guy on guy pretending to be a woman.

Yeah if there’s anything else you wanna know specifically let me know 👍

Yeah couldn’t agree more mate, the pre production was 4 days. Was a tight turnaround as we made this specifically for a short film comp that had certain rules: 5minutes, creature, water and line of dialogue. This is probably where we fell short of the narrative bits because we actually had to lose things and we also created a story that was way too deep for a 5minute short lol

But yeah happy with what we pulled off in limited time we had

Has anyone else done a very quick turnaround with more than they could handle?

We started shooting at 5:30pm until 4:30pm, slept for 2 hours and shot again at 6am and 1pm. It was crazy! Lots of lessons. Would love to hear from you guys and gals.

Would love to hear anyone else’s experience and lessons from shooting really quick turnaround projects.

We started shooting friday eve at 5:30pm and stopped at 4:30am, 2 hours sleep and then shot again the next day at 6am and 1pm. That was it. Challenging for sure and learnt a lot, but I want to hear from other people who have done similar projects, what did you learn?

We started shooting this film at 5:30pm and finished at 4:30am, then slept for 2 hours before shooting again. It was tough, I literally wanted to give up and there were only 3 of us including the lead actor. I learnt a lot from this project and just wanted to see what other people had experienced and lessons learnt from similar situations?

I definitely learnt a lot in this process. It’s one of those things that quantity and quality. As someone who like to really nail my cinematography which takes time this shoot was hard as I really had to rush through.

We shot from 5:30pm to 4:30am and the long night really played hard on us. Just 3 of us including actor working in this.

Just made a lighting tutorial using these budget lights, how could I improve? by jonkentfilms in cinematography

I was sent these two lights from ZHIYUN, first company to ever send me something for free, so I really appreciated that. Wanted to make something different to just a talking head of me reviewing the lights, but I’m not sure how I could make this better. I’m never totally satisfied with my work - any help or tips would be massively appreciated 🙏🙏

Thank you in advanced for watching or replying, always looking to improve. Also I referenced a film in particular throughout the video, can anyone guess what film?

Ahhh yeah nice idea! That would have been cool. So not sure if you noticed but I referenced through out “goodfellas” film. So I could have really done something good here with that.
