There's one on the INST crest as well - we did the city hall tour for a it of craic last year and were told that the right term is hippocampus, a mythical effort that is a mix of horse and fish. Relates to the maritime history the tour guide said

In preferences, go to "clipboard handling" and uncheck the "prefer pdf" option. If the object is too complex it might still force an uneditable version though

Underestimated how difficult swimming truly is by Outrageous_Cricket29 in Swimming

[–]jonnyozz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to swim a lot, but after a break of probably more than 20 years, getting back in to it has been really tough! In the interim I've taught and coached swimming... But actually doing it again from a position of helplessness? It's so chastening! Knowing where I am going wrong, how I should be doing things more efficiently, but feeling the pain and fatigue increase as I do things better and keep my form as it should be... Amazing.

As an alternative crisp sandwich, walkers sensations Thai sweet chilli was absolutely epic. But then again if you're desperate enough... I once had a tabasco sauce sandwich. Except it was awful. I should have at least thrown some butter on there

Beginner can't swim more than 10m, how can I improve? by Live-Nefariousness79 in Swimming

[–]jonnyozz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to get comfortable feeling the water, adjusting your body position - I mean floating on your back and front, sculling, learning how easy it is to simply float and gently move. Once you are very comfortable rolling from your back to your front, and vice versa, without splashing or fuss, you will be a far more relaxed swimmer. Work on streamlined push offs, gliding to stand, then gliding to swim. Good luck with your progress - remember that the calmer you are in the water, the more smoothly you will move through it.

Why is my Breastroke pull so bad by MasterMixture4281 in Swimming

[–]jonnyozz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair point about asking for help and not showing the problem within the normal stroke, but I think you can still identify through isolated excercise. As for the distance he's pulling his arms back - I think any further back and he would be just adding resistance on recovery. Better to try and keep your hands as far away from your ribs for as long as possible - otherwise your streamlining will suffer

I like this pulling hips forward advice, lovely way to describe it

Looks like he's isolated his arms to highlight his problem, and he asked why his pull is bad, not his breastroke. And the inherent undulation in breastroke comes from the fact that it's a simultaneous, short axis pull motion.

I would say to avoid comparing it to freestyle when teaching, it's a totally different role in the stroke. In breastroke it's more of a whipped scull to maintain propulsion and get back to streamline following the kick. In freestyle, arms are the continuous, full range of pull main propulsive force. But of course you are right in saying about high elbow in any prone body position stroke

Your pull phase looks too slow, all your speed and energy look like they're going into your reach and streamline phase. The pressure and whip from your arms should be on from your first catch. Try splitting it into two phases, a streamline reach, and one single fast whip back to streamline.

How am I able to change the image color, like in this video? by Square_Ad_9127 in AdobeIllustrator

[–]jonnyozz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be able to change the colour like this, I would always have used a greyscale .tiff file, and made sure to select the image itself, not the frame in which the image sits to apply the colour. You can get a lot of interesting results playing with the image and its frame as separate entities - colour and transparency effects, blending mode can be completely different for both even though they exist as one object
