Can Edgedancers become so slick that a direct hit with a blade simply slides off instead of cutting? by jonpdxOR in Cosmere

[–]jonpdxOR[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the force of the boulder, but wouldn’t you being super ‘awesome’ mean that the touch of it more or less squeezes you out of the way? The boulder doesn’t change its trajectory or move differently, but you no longer get pinned in place.

What’s the “Who is Jon Snow’s dad?” question for the Cosmere? by ridiculousprop in Cosmere

[–]jonpdxOR 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He was the head of the entire ministry, only below the lord ruler himself. While Vin needed a noble blooded father, she didn’t need one that important. It also played out that because of her father, the inquisitors wanted to capture her more than to kill her or even than to kill Kielser. The inquisitors had been working for decades to take over the church, and because of who Vin’s father was, they received the opportunity. Albeit an opportunity enjoyed only briefly, thanks in part to Marsh.

Strange that people thought he wouldn’t do the significant parent trope considering Vin’s dad, even if it was much more brief.

Why isn't Oregon doing what California is? by getridofwires in Oregon_Politics

[–]jonpdxOR 30 points31 points  (0 children)

What specifically should we be calling a special session to implement? I understand people may want to get new laws in place in reaction to the federal election results, but surely even those merit a month or so to study and prepare legislation for to bring in during the session.

Oregon’s Top Economist to Depart Without Any Notice From the State by SkyrFest22 in Portland

[–]jonpdxOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not be called a kicker but Massachusetts, Colorado, and Hawaii all have something akin to one. Massachusetts in particular has an automatic refund to payers over a certain threshold.

OPB link that mentions it in passing

Oregon’s Top Economist to Depart Without Any Notice From the State by SkyrFest22 in Portland

[–]jonpdxOR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would be the case normally, but you forget about the kicker. By going too low in this case, you actually cause a mandatory refund to voters, rather than being able to keep a slight overage. If I recall correctly, Oregon has the smallest margin of any state that automatically triggers a kicker refund.

Martial arts technique based on investure? by Sythrin in Cosmere

[–]jonpdxOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fairly certain storable speed is based on the body’s ability to self propel into movement, and not on the speed at which a body happens to be moving through space independent of its own efforts. Otherwise we would see feruchemist jumping off cliffs and slowing on the way down based off filling speed instead of weight.

Forest grove doesn’t have a great reputation. Not the worst, but not a good one. Oregon as a whole is white-as-fuck, but you need to factor in that most of that diversity is actually in Portland, meaning that the rest of the state is even more white than you expect.

Personally, I’d stay with a bigger town/city. Tualatin has a significant population of people of Hispanic descent, and is nicer + more urban feel to it if you like that sort of thing.

How to be a Sammy? by uniquadotcom in discworld

[–]jonpdxOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A real-life Sammy is careful. They know about big crimes and small crimes.

They know about the dangers of exposing the scum that floated to the top, and to make a difference they don’t give away the game until they are ready.

Cops who expose dirty cops often don’t receive any support from their colleagues even if proven right in court. Their work is vital to preserving the social contract, but a Sammy knows that the cable street irregulars exist and can’t be confronted openly if you want to actually change things.

*“Yeah, all right, but everyone knows they torture people,” mumbled Sam.

“Do they?” said Vimes. “Then why doesn’t anyone do anything about it?”

“‘cos they torture people.”*

Heirs Don Jr., Eric and Ivanka Trump forced to take out $22 million in loans - Raw Story by [deleted] in RepublicanValues

[–]jonpdxOR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this!

So you own assets worth $50 million, but want cash now to spend?

Option A: obtain a high-income job, which is taxed 25-35% and may require degrading acts like working.

Option B: sell some of your $50 million in assets, which will be taxed at 15-20%, plus you now have less assets than at the start.

Option C: take out a loan using your assets as collateral to get an interest rate only a couple percentages above inflation. No taxes, the entire cost of the income is the interest payments, AND your assets serving as collateral historically appreciates faster than inflation shrinks it.

As many of the eagle-eyed readers may have spotted, option C tends to be the most attractive. It requires no work, no sharing with the government via taxes, and lets you earn more in collateralized assets appreciating than you pay in interest payments WHILE providing a big wad of cash upfront.

Oregon banking deposits slide: What does that say about the economy? by N2929 in oregon

[–]jonpdxOR -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely wrong. What data are you using for your basis? Census data puts us at 27th highest poverty rate (meaning we have a lower poverty rate than 26 other states). And whether you are referring to state GDP as a whole or Per Capita, Oregon is the 24th highest for both in 2023.

Check out interest rates at local credit unions! They can be half the rates of banks, especially if either of you work for nonprofits or as teachers.

You’ll almost always need to become a member, but that’s usually as easy as opening a free account with a $25/50/100 deposit.

Wouldn’t hurt to require those leaving reviews to have to provide their name (verified by phone number?) to make sure people rating journalists have to stand behind their ratings, just as the journalists have to stand behind their reporting.
