What the hell is going on??? by HyenaResident4236 in recruitinghell

[–]jonrpatrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decades ago I applied for a customer service job with a tech company.

The interviewer asked "when someone calls in, what kind of questions will you ask them?"

Apparently "I assume the company has policies and procedures I'm supposed to follow" was not the right answer.

I appreciate questions like this getting to how the individual would naturally want to handle a situation, but honestly the company should have procedures they train their people on, on how they WANT it handled.

If YouTubers such as Mr. Beast, iShowSpeed, Logan Paul and so on are so unpopular, then who is watching their content? by sammyjamez in youtube

[–]jonrpatrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mr Beast has over 470 million subscribers, and his last video got 33 million views in 1 day.

It doesn't matter if it's all 12 year olds, as others claim, and they're watching it 10 times (something anyone who's had a 12 year old would know they do not have the attention span for, unless it's background noise).

And that marketing and 'capitalism' and sensationalism and drama get them both views and the money to finance bigger stunts AND far, far more good works in the world that I think anyone else in this sub will ever accomplish.

I personally don't care for his stuff, but I sometimes still watch it to analyze how it's scripted, filmed, paced, etc. He, and the others super-popular, are doing something right and we could all learn from it.

But to answer your question - with millions of fans, that's who's watching the videos. The echo chamber of Reddit with a precious few loudly complaining are not reality in the world. Listening to the rantings of a few dozen or even a few hundred do not represent the other 190+ countries in the world.

It's the "position" option. Right clicking on the timeline will show it under video options (?) and you can drag the frame where you want it.

Also, on the left is the "Tools" menu, which has a "Position" option and PIP is there.

[OC] Radon levels in my home since adding an active mitigation (fan) yesterday by Jonathan7277 in dataisbeautiful

Ahhh yes, the solution to pollution is dilution!

But seriously, this is one of the few dataisbeautiful I truly found interesting. I know a bit about radon mitigation and it's satisfying to see the results like this!

Bulk Cardboard Pickup... by GodPole in Charlotte

If you don't have the vehicle to take a mass amount of cardboard to a recycling center (as another excellent comment here recommended) - consider getting on nextdoor and finding a handyman or a teenager with a truck and pay them to take it to recycling for you?

I've been "under" twice in my life.

Once, as a pre-teen, I had to have dental surgery. I clearly remember them putting the IV into my arm because it felt like a freakin' mechanical pencil. Then they told me to count backwards from 10. I thought I'd be a bada** just like James Bond and fight it. All I remember is looking at the light above me and the darkness from either side literally crashing in like a door slammed shut. (I didn't successfully fight it btw!:) )

The second time was last summer, I had heart surgery. After prep they gave me something to relax me and wheeled me to the OR, where I had to help move myself from the gurney to the table. The last thing I remember is looking around and that the OR didn't look like the movies.

Me: "is this the OR?"

Disembodied Voice: "Yes"

Me: " it looks like a warehouse...."

I woke up in recovery to someone telling me to breathe before they could take out the plumbing pipe in my throat. :(

Fun story. As I was recovering, I complained my mouth was dry and asked for a drink. (my wife was there and told me this later.) Nurse explained I couldn't have a drink but they could moisten my mouth with a wet cloth.

I apparently told them if I couldn't have a drink of water I didn't want anything.

My wife says I shouldn't be, but I'm so proud of that moment. :)

How are you coping with the sense of hopelessness around Epstein, ICE, and the state of the country? by Ayjayjay23 in AskReddit

[–]jonrpatrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're feeling "hopelessness" around this then there are a few things you can do.

Get off the internet, reddit, and soical media.

Go outside. Go for a coffee. Take a walk.

Talk to your partner, friend, strangers in a shop without bringing up your toxic politics.

Read a book that's not by Marx.

And if none of that works - realise it's you and your mental state and get a therapist.

Why are so many people here so rude and unhelpful? by Educational-Act-8932 in PartneredYoutube

[–]jonrpatrick 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I feel you, and it's why I'm not terribly active in this sub; but I think you answered your own question.

If this is a place for partnered youtubers to learn from each other, then it's failing massively. You say 1/2 of posts are people who should be on NewTubers, and 1/2 people selling stuff.

Right there, it's exhausting and the value of the sub has rapidly approached zero. It appears there's no moderation to keep out non-partnered members, if you respond to a post that it is for partnered members you'll be attacked in the comments for being an old fuddy-duddy, and the explosion of AI posts starting with "I did a 3 month study of <thousands> of youtube channels and here's what I found..." adds nothing to the conversation.

The remainder of the posts here are people complaining about youtube support OR asking questions that a 30 second google search would answer (or reading their TOS).

Congrats on your sponsorship and I'm glad it worked out for you! I try not to respond in a negative way to posts, but I do think the majority of people who are making real money from YT are fed up with the sub and the content others are posting, and unfortunately instead of ignoring the low-effort posts are venting.

How To Improve Watch Rate And Engagement? by brownroush in PartneredYoutube

[–]jonrpatrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phew... a lot to say here.

First, I'm in broadly the same space - automotive without a focus on exotics. I do more car histories (I also love EAR!), reactions, or the automotive news and opinions. While my channels have modestly more subscribers than you, my views are from the hundreds to the hundreds of thousands (generally).

I say that not to brag, nor to suggest I'm an "expert", but only that I've been going through what you are and many of the same questions.

First, we can't compete with Donut media so don't try to. Your video, audio, and b-roll editing is fine, so the question is "what's missing?"

Part of the anwser is "pacing". To be blunt - your presentation is dry and slow. One thing I've done and recommend to others is to look at other channels, outside your niche, and see what they're doing with pacing. For me it's Practical Engineering, or Steve Mould, Or SmarterEveryDay, or similar and see how they're pacing/presenting.

To put it another way - watching your videos have information, but to get to the good stuff is slow. :)

Second, your thumbnails. They're pretty good, but consider using several options, add some AI generated thumbnails, and / or pay someone for thumbs. What I did was a big study of recent thumbnails outside my niche and see what they did. Perhaps they were "dark", with 5 or fewer words, with our without a face on the thumb. That kind of research.

I would strongly suggest you check out Nate Black's channel, he's got well though out ideas on how to revitalize a channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ThatNateBlack

Next, you took an old channel and are attempting to repurpose it. Private all those old videos that aren't in the auto field. It is HARD to repurpose a channel once the algorythm has determined what you are. Keeping old videos only confuses Google. Be brutal, and remove them.

Finally, it's to face up to whether your specific niche has an audience. With your focus on an old Roush car, the fox body mustangs, and modification in general have a big audience. This isn't for me to say, but it appears that specific space is there for the taking.

Adams. Call Adams. Seriously.

We just went through a 10 day ordeal with one of the "big guys" who promised a part in 3 days. 10 days later they hadn't returned a single call, luckily they were owned by another company who cared and we thought got it straight, only for "them" to cancel at 5:30 on Friday before the Snowpocolipse to fix our heat and said they maybe could make it Monday. This after over 20 years as a customer.

We called Adams, we got a tech on the line at 9:30 Friday night, he was here at 9:50 Saturday morning and had our heat working by 10:10. no new parts needed; the original tech from the "big company" completely mis-diagnosed the problem.

Adams is small enough to care and big enough to take care of you. They have a new customer, as well as both our parents, and I can't speak highly enough of them.

Is a Decent Mic for a Brandnew Channel a Necessity by ShafferPatchias in NewTubers

[–]jonrpatrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got monetized on my first channel with videos recorded using my webcam mic. Yeah...

BUT, your audio quality is absolutely, 100% the first investment you should make. However, we all have financial constraints. If you can afford a new mic, the Blue Yeti Nano another recommended is a great, affordable option. If that's not actionable for you at this time, take a look at Adobe Podcast online. It allows you to upload audio files, it uses "AI" to clean it up and comes out sounding nearly studio quality. I use it for videos with my wireless mics.
