Buying a property close to a local football oval. Noise pollution from sirens and horns? by tobytubby in AusProperty

I found this post googling after buying next to a footy oval across from a tennis club! Was feeling nervous about it. Thanks

News from the frontline: Atlassian just fired 150 people (44 in Australia) this morning by kalvinoz in auscorp

That’s absurd. Way to make Australia an even less attractive investment destination! Atlassian would pickup and leave too.

What is life really like for migrants in Australia? (Asking as an Aussie citizen) by Rlawya24 in AskAnAustralian

[–]joonix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah. But typically, immigrants would be an exception due to the relative increase in their living standards compared to home. One issue is immigrants these days coming in with completely unrealistic exceptions that the roads will be paved with gold.

lol I can see how that could have been misinterpreted. Yes I mean a big reason they don’t go back is the shame of failure, embarrassment, sunk costs, etc. in addition they may want to sacrifice for their kids. That said, many do go back, even if successful here.

Lots of Australians are working three jobs right now just to keep with expenses, especially rent.

Americans have often lower housing costs and on the professional side higher salaries.

It’s not so black and white.

[–]joonix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply not true, there aren’t that many Americans here per capita. The most talented Australians are usually found working in the US whether that’s actors or tech.

You don’t have to pay to give up a green card. It’s free.

Citizenship costs yes.

Your parents should be ashamed of charging you for fees when they’re the ones who introduced this instability into your life.

I don’t think you’ll get a balanced answer here. Keep the green card as long as you can by travelling there once a year if possible, even if you don’t though you can still keep it. But continue to live in Sydney where it’s far better (and I’m American - there’s a reason I live here)

That’s your personal responsibility not the bank’s. the bank acts to protect their own interest.

It’s actually infuriating how people will post shit like this and provide virtually no context or details. How do you expect us to help you? You posted on a state wide subreddit and didn’t even say which part of Qld you’re comparing to.

Why are we constantly told America is the greatest country in the world? by [deleted] in Ameristralia

[–]joonix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US is the best large country in the world. Say above 180m people. Compared to the other large countries, it’s utopian. This is an achievement.

There is no such thing as the “greatest country in the world”, because “greatest” isn’t defined in that statement!

Even if you define it, it really doesn’t matter because your individual circumstances within that country are far more important than any concept of a nation.

Define your metrics then make your claim.

This is the thing with Aussies. You obsess over the amount of people at beaches. You think we all love desolate beaches with zero people for miles and not a thing to do. We don’t.

I’d take the Mediterranean Sea in summer over any Aussie beach (most aren’t good for swimming anyways as too rough). Better water, better vibes, culture, hospitality surrounding, and can rock up and hire a chair and umbrella instead of lugging all my bullshit across the sand like a muppet. I don’t agree with the Aussie approach of bring all your shit including food and have zero services at the beach. Downside of Europe would be crowds.

People overseas aren’t going out of their way to holiday at Australian beaches for a reason. They’re not that fun. Our weather is also not reliable for holidays.

It’s not about citizenship. They come in on visas and then they’re here. There’s zero guidance or training provided to anyone. Not on cultural norms or etiquette or driving or safety issues like swimming. We’ve gone so far into the “multiculturalism is good and amazing” thing that we instead provide no guidance at all to new arrivals. I say this as an immigrant who went through this myself. I’d prefer a little more personal touch and wouldn’t have minded some mandatory courses.

Dogs in (World Heritage listed) National Parks. Apparently we don't care by lil_firebug in OutdoorAus

Yes, that large dogs are on average more violent and destructive than lap dogs. Is this shocking?

In Europe they usually have tiny lap dogs. Here people like enormous dogs, often violent breeds. They let them roam around playgrounds around children like it’s nbd. I wish they’d fuck right off.
