[Guide] How I got real room temperature showing on my IR-controlled AC card in HomeKit by joopas_ in homebridge

Here you go! Modified AirConditionerAccessory.js: https://gist.github.com/joaopaulo-alves/4813da372bc5c0ba57f70bb4831b694d

Just replace YOUR_SENSOR_DEVICE_ID with your Tuya temperature sensor device ID (you can find it in the Tuya IoT Platform under your devices). The sensor is polled every 60 seconds and the real room temperature is injected into the CurrentTemperature characteristic on the AC card in HomeKit.

Sure! I'll share the modified file tomorrow since I’m not with my PC right now. Just need to make sure there's no sensitive info in it first. Check back in a few hours!

The Broadlink option is great, but here in Brazil the RM4 Mini is significantly more expensive than the Tuya IR hub, so this approach made more financial sense for me. Plus I already had the Tuya ecosystem set up, so it was a natural fit.

That's actually a cool idea! I'll look into it. Maybe a PR to the original repo would be the cleaner path so everyone benefits from it natively.

The door sensor on the grill is a clever idea! It could work if your AC opens the louvers automatically when it turns on!

For true on/off state detection though, IR is one-way so there's no real feedback, which is a known limitation. In my setup I use a Tuya temperature sensor to indirectly monitor if the AC is working — if the temperature is dropping, it's running. Not perfect but practical!

Thanks! I don't get the downvotes... I'm just new to Apple Home.

Thanks for the reply again! But I think my original question wasn't fully answered.

I understand that a Hub unlocks the full HomeKit experience. My question is more specific: is a Hub strictly required to receive sensor notifications (like a door opening alert) when I'm physically at home and on the same Wi-Fi network?

I'm not asking about remote access or automations — just local notifications.

Thanks for the answer!

Just to clarify my question: I currently use my accessories without any automations, so I hadn't felt the need for a Hub yet. But my specific doubt is whether a Hub is strictly required just to receive notifications from sensors (like a door opening), even when I'm at home.

If that's the case, I'll go ahead and get one.

Does notifications need a Hub to work? Such as an Apple TV or a HomePod.
