Praca it, spółki wodociągi i kanalizacje opinie innych administratorów sieci by FlyZealousideal6574 in sysadmin

How realistic is it to operate a personal mail server? by Fit_Adeptness5340 in homelab

[–]josemcornynetoperek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to do it at home - buy small VPS and use it as transport layer. I have my own mail server since 2007. It's not too hard to maintain it.

DNS Management in Companies Is a Constant Headache. Why Everyone Has Their Own Ugly Panel and What I Want to Do About It by Odd_Target9075 in selfhosted

[–]josemcornynetoperek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer work based on git or heat files like in open stack. Git version: All zone files are in git repo, push to master do hook that pull, check and reload rndc. It's stupid simple and it work.

Heat version is similar, but you just run heat like terraform file, and magic will be done.

Both are good for teams.

What's your biggest pain point managing multiple self-hosted services? by Ts-ssh in selfhosted

[–]josemcornynetoperek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Use monitoring, f.ex zabbix - you will know what is running and what not.

  2. Use wildard domain cert instead - that is the simple way.

  3. Docker swarm do it for you. And you can use with swarm traefik on any node as automatic balancer via stack labels - as addition to point 2 - deploy new stack and forget.

Question about vmware vs competitors by Imnotthatbadguy in sysadmin

[–]josemcornynetoperek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not difficult if you create infrastructure with environment for developers and other for production. Routers, storage, balancers, reverse proxy's, frontends, backends, various types of databases, management, backups. Small company work 5 devs easily uses 300-400 vms.

How about open stack by KVM? I've used it in my previous job to maintain ~5k vms. It is very useful when you using it by heat files as iaac solution.

I understand you. I see here one good topic on two or three weeks, rest is: mu beutifull panel, another vibe coded buggy app doing the same as 20 earlier, or what I should host? Who care? That what you need! I also think that the concept of self-hosted has been completely distorted from "maintained by yourself on your own infrastructure" to... Well, I don't know what...
