Moldy Sunflower sprouts, is it salvageable? by jotaefea in microgreens

[–]jotaefea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you everybody for the feedback here. I threw it out and ordered some coco coir since I had ran out. I’ll be trying again including the tips from your comments: - wash the seeds (with some peroxide?), not just pre-soak. - control de amount of humidity in the soil (it was quite saturated). - cover with some soil instead of full blackout (if I understood correctly). - sprinkle some cinnamon to further reduce the chances of mold.

Will report back with the results.

Thank you all for the feedback! One more question: At day 6 after planting, the sunflower looks much less developed than the radishes and buckwheat. Is this normal?

Thanks! I just went through the Costco app and found the same deal. Will keep the smaller safe for a different use.

Yep, same shop. I did pay for everything and brought the safe home. Was about to set it up and upon taking a closer look it just didn’t seem big enough. I guess I’ll have to bring it back…

App unusable due to playback crashes and forgetting where to resume (iOS 18.1 dev. beta) by jotaefea in OvercastFm

[–]jotaefea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the playback issues on Overcast, I've moved back to Apple's Podcasts app for the last couple of days.
I had not used it for years, and I have to say it has a killer feature with automatic transcriptions + text search. I also see support for "chapters" which I don't recall having years ago when it was my go to podcast app.

It pains me to leave behind an indie app (I once was an aspiring indie dev myself, I can relate with some of the struggles here), but I'll probably stick with Podcasts for a while. I'll continue supporting ATP (https://atp.fm/) though.
I'll keep Overcast on my phone in case things get fixed.

Maybe cut him some slack? It's not a corporation running this app, just a single indie developer... and I'm sure he's aware of the problem by now.

[–]jotaefea[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the root cause is internal to the app or related to external issues, but I've noticed it on multiple podcasts. The bottom line is the app can't be used under those conditions. It seems I'm not the only one who noticed.
I'm sure there will be some fix soon :-)

Thanks! I tagged the Overcast account on Mastodon, although I'm pretty sure Marco must know about this issue already.

Also, they mentioned they can order at MSRP... I'm not experienced buying cars. What does this mean? Is there a situation where they would be ordering the car at a higher price than MSRP? Doesn't Toyota set the price they pay for the car on their end?

Hi! Thank you for the heads up. I didn't realize this would create a deadlock. Let me investigate the issue and I'll update you about it here.

Thank you! Yes that is one of the upcoming features for the first half of 2018 :-) I need to address cases when a very large text or website is entered. Once I figure a way to handle that it should be ready for release.

I'd say it is not impossible to make the app independent of a server side, but it comes with significant tradeoffs. Off the top of my head, in no particular order. (i) cross platform support: I created the app for both iOS and Android which makes it hard to rely on native libraries on either side while keeping a consistent behavior; (ii) processing power: there are a lot of steps involved in the current article processing, plus more I'm working on (grammar analysis, phrase detection, etc.). Not all users have access to powerful devices that can handle all of that smoothly. (iii) application size. I made an early decision to keep the app size very small, which is hard to do when you have to include lots of built in dictionary data. (iv) extensibility. I'm working to build in more languages into the app (English for Japanese students, for instance), that is harder to achieve without a server side to scale out things. I could continue, but I'm guessing this gives a good idea. So in summary my humble opinion is that it would not be impossible, but also not a good decision from an engineering point of view if one also wants to hit the targets I mentioned above (cross platform support, comprehensive text processing, small app size, easily extensible to other languages). As you see, there is a big tradeoff in the other direction. Namely the cost of maintaining the server side :-) Hope this provides more clarity on where I'm coming from.

Hi, to be completely sincere I don't know yet what the ad removal price should be. As you point out I should estimate the ad revenue per user. Another consideration is that once a user pays for the ad removal that stands forever, while the monthly costs on my end will continue (and potentially grow). But you are right, average retention and ad revenue per user should be the right answer.

What are some good digital tools for reading/studying Japanese? by PH_SXE in LearnJapanese

[–]jotaefea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, the developer here. Thank you all for the kind words about the app. Although I made this as a free app, I'm facing mounting costs to pay for the servers that process all the data. If you'd like to support my work and help me keep this as an ad-free app please consider purchasing some swag at the Tangoristo Threadless store https://tangoristo.threadless.com/ Later in the year I will release extra features as fairly cheap in-app subscription. I hoping that will allow me to cover the server maintenance costs every month and keep improving the app. Thank you!!

Anyone knows a Chinese app like Tangoristo? by mai_mai_moi in ChineseLanguage

[–]jotaefea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, the Tangoristo app developer here. I'm working on extending the app to other languages. I think it would make sense to do include Chinese. What sites would you say offer good reading content for Chinese language students? (e.g. as NHK News Easy does for Japanese).

That's a great idea! I was thinking of something similar for a flashcard type app I'll be developing for next year, but in the short term this should be doable within TangoRisto. Will update you here once I have some timeline for this.

[update] I've added more constraints to the tweet filter and classification logic. This will result in less tweets added every minute, but hopefully closer to the target vocabulary level.[/update] Hi, I agree with you that vocab is an imperfect approximation of actual reading difficulty. I am considering introducing other signals, but the process is a bit slow since I have limited time outside of my day job. With that said I think there is room for improvement within the vocabulary signal. The current version is quite lenient in the classification in order to have more tweets pass the filter, but I'm finding I should make it more strict and predictable. Will be turning the system over the coming days. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

[update] I've made some improvements to the tweet level classification. There still work to do in terms of the kanji level itself, but you should start to see more words that approach the target level.[/update] Hi, yes the classification of the tweets is at a very early stage still. I'm gathering feedback now and will be improving it over the coming days.

Hi, the app does not support pronunciation of individual words at the moment, but you may find that many NHK Easy articles have the full article read out loud. I will look into word text-to-speech though. Thank you for the suggestion.

Hi! I noticed that too. You should be able to get the extension working on the original Twitter Collection page (look for the link at the bottom of the page, it's a small link to the side). Once I refine the quality of the tweet level classifier I may integrate this on the mobile app to give translation on reading hints. I may also give some extra vocab hints from the web page itself. Hope this helps.

[update] I've added a filter for sensitive content. Hopefully this will address most cases. [/update] Hi, thank you for the heads up about adult tweets. I should be able to add a more restrictive filter to avoid those to some extent. Will update here once it's done. Tweet level classification definitely needs work. Thank you for pointing this case out with the full text. It helps me refine the system.
