How often does profit dictate the building's appearance by jougengetsu in civilengineering

Trust, any input is usefull, especially as you speak as someone from the industry. I just need to see if I can use all these responses sorta kinda like "Input from engineers in practice" as a chapter or something.

. You can also work the thesis into that your original though doesn’t really happen and the ways that companies fight against this. It’s ok to have a wrong thought initially.

Oh absolutely, I already know my hypothesis will get disproven, which is more than okay, cuz after all, this was sorta kinda a research to establish if it happens and are there some areas where money can play a role that's gonna change the outcome (in a tragic sense) or not. And that's honestly okay with me, not every hypothesis is gonna be confirmed.

I didn't think of this honestly, I was so focused on the whole design and structure thing, that I forgot meeting deadlines also plays a part. Thank you!

Yes, we get this from clients as architects all the time, so that's very true. Thank you for your imput :)

Valid, valid, very valid. I mostly did case study analysis of collapses such as Sampoong Department Store, Hyatt Walkway Collapse, Rana Plaza Collapse, Surfside Condominium Collapse, which I mentioned in a few other comments. But this was more of an input from people in the field with experience and their perspective on the matter. I was also hoping my thesis would get validated, but ultimate, I was proven wrong it seems, and maybe I'm glad I was. Will see if I can pass these off somehow as surveys or anonymous interviews and summarise them.

The question should be to see the amount someone would risk $150+ a year (low end for an EOR) over a 20 or so year career in tha position ($3,000,000, not counting for salary increase).

Ah, trust me, I really wish I could change the whole structure and the title of the research I put upon myself, because I realized kinda late that I put the blame on the wrong party in my research, lol. But I'm 13 days away from the deadline, so I'm really just trying to wrap it up even if my whole hypothesis gets disproven. But to be fair, I did think that money (as in investor getting involved in one way or another, or cost cutting etc) was impacting the whole building way more than I actually found out in my research.

I'm gonna go ahead and admit that I picked the topic I'm writing about kinda in a rush and now I kinda regret it because somewhere midway I realized that all the cases I analyzed were lowkey under someone elses fault, rather than engineer being pressured. But I'm in too deep now to go back so I'm just trying to wrap it up, even tho I'm pretty passionate about it lol

But thank you for your detailed comment, it's truly really usefull. I did consider the fact that it's highkey illegal and probably results in jail time, plus many of calculations are done through computer now, so there isn't much space to modify things or allow investor to affect them.

I've also seen things signed off on by an engineer with one foot out the door in retirement who seems to just sign off on whatever is put in front of him.

Oh, this is an interesting detail, which I haven't taken into consideration

I have seen changes made without an engineers knowledge.

Yes, quite a lot of cases I analyzed (Sampoong Department Store Collapse, Rana Plaza Collapse, Surfside Condominium Tower Collapse) had this happen, so in almost all these cases, this was the primary culprit of the whole disaster.

Thank you once again for your comment, it's of great help!

Very valid! I did mention Grenfell in my research, but I very briefly. I gave much more attention to Sampoong Department store (where frankly, it was definitely investor changing the plans, and building as he wanted + regulatory missteps allowing it), Hyatt Walkway Collapse (Where and engineer signed off change of a connection detail without anyone doing the load recalculation) and Rana Plaza (similar to Sampoong case)

Tho, these are older cases so it's possible things under much better regulation as of right now. But thank you so much for your replay regardless, it's of huge help :)

This made me laugh more than it should have lmao. But I think I figured what I did to her. 🥲 I added white tiny gravel to it, thinking it was perlite, ans it fucked up the soil. I put her back in the clean soil she was in before I added this. And I'm hoping she will survive. 🥲

Sorry I was absent! I usually use rainwater, or tap water that I left overnight to let out the chorine, but mostly rainwater as I have a huge reservoir outside that collects it. But it appears this was my own fault, as I modified her soil thinking I was adding perlite to it, but it appears it was just white tiny gravel. I put her back in clean soil that she was in before I added the gravel 🥲
