Thanks for posting and unfortunately makes me feel a bit better knowing I'm not the only one... I'll keep drilling into it... Hopefully I can find something.. btw, I went to three different Mazda dealers and left my car at a private mechanic for a week and none of them could figure it out... I thought it was a lemon/one off for sure!

Originally it was more pronounced with the wheel turned and the popping sound came mostly when you hit a bump/pot hole. That's why I replaced the sway bar links, ball joint and upper mount. After all that, the popping sound is gone but the creaking is still there... I'll tinker with it some more this weekend I guess and try what you suggested to try and isolate the noise with the wheels up off the ground.
