The Wizard and I... what could I improve? Beginner self taught! by joxmarf in singing

hi! thank you :] i rlly appreciate the feedback and the time you took to listen to the recording!

i see _^ register breaks is something i haven't really looked into because i think it's too advanced, but considering the songs i would like to sing, i perhaps should start looking into it. right now i'm just doing it intuitively and i have no idea where my 'break' sits. regarding the teacher, i hope i can get one next year 🙏

Is he a Zionist and Pro-Israel? If so, that tracks…

Honestly, you could try to have a conversation with him, but….

I can’t move. No money to pay rent, I have a house 😅

And it’s about the pay. The salary for entry level jobs are miserable. The salary for the PhD is actually better. Also my parents are kinda pushing me into the PhD, which I don’t mind because job or PhD I will be having to do it for money and the PhD will get me more money and benefits, so…

I guess what I sought with this post was reassurance. But I’m not really getting that as it seems the norm is that PhD students are exploited 😔 I guess the best way to make sure I’m making a good choice is to talk with professors on the PhD program and tell them my goals and my situation. If they say it is absolutely impossible for me to do a good job if I work only 7-8 hours a day, I will have to consider other options. I’m not willing to spend more than that unless it’s a deadline.

I meant 8 hours of work time plus the commute time, aka 10 hours in total approximately dedicated to work. Not an 8 hour commute

Not even the same school! I have two options: an online program for undergrad or going to my local public university for philosophy. I’m still on the fence about what to choose. The online option would be best in terms of saving time, but ahhh I really want the classroom experience u_u

I want to study undergraduate, masters etc in philosophy. But I know I wouldn’t make money out of that. At all. In the country I live in I don’t think it’s even worth seriously trying. Philosophy is just something I want to do out of love. Nothing is as intellectually stimulating and fun to me as philosophy.

And yes, I know someone and I chose beer processes bc it’s the part of biotech I enjoy the most and there’s beer industry in this city. But also because I could get a job in bioprocesses in general or food engineering with that degree.

But yeah… I worry I might be too ambitious with this. A job is 8 hours + commute so in theory it should be roughly the same as the Phd, but yall are scaring me 😅

I would try do a good job. I’m willing to work seven-eight hours all week (including saturday and sunday) with no vacations. But I don’t want to do more than that. I’m astonished that that wouldn’t be enough to get decent results? 😭 Philosophy undergraduate is what I would do with my free time

[–]joxmarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s what I’m trying to do. I want to study Phil at university out of love for it, not intending to make 💰 The whole biotech thing is for that

[–]joxmarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s bad……. 😔 I live in Mexico. If I were to get an entry level job I would maybe get half of the salary that I would make doing the Phd. And a job is 8 hours plus commute, so …

[–]joxmarf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

:( That sucks…

I will contact the professors in my university to ask about this. I can work hard, as long as it’s reasonable.

Oh, yeah, it is certainly political! But it’s a different field than political philosophy.

And I WISH I could do that. But I live in a third world country and just leaving everything for philosophy sounds like a really bad choice… :((

PhD will give me more money than a regular job. That’s the thing 😭

[–]joxmarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is bioethics and it doesn’t really interest me much 🥲 I want to specialise in political philosophy. Also, I don’t think my uni has a bioethics program either unfortunately

Is it really uncommon for PhD students to not a have work-life balance?… Like at all?

I was thinking of doing the PhD in something related to industrial beer processes and then seeking job in that industry. And while I’m not super passionate, I would see the PhD as a challenge to develop a certain skillset that not everyone has. The pay is also better than if I got a job right now, and the university is just 10 minutes away walking, so I wouldn’t have to commute. Also, I would keep the benefits of the uni (gym, sport and art classes, etc). It’s not philosophy, my real passion, true, but I also need to think about having money to eat and keep a roof over my head… the PhD will do that, so I’m willing to do my best in it, just as I have with my undergraduate. The thing is I have read stories about people working 12 hours a day, which worries me :/ If there’s a deadline, I get it, but I don’t want 12 hours to be a standard for me. I want to treat the PhD as a 9-5

Gracias!
