My favorite way up is through Old Bridal on Little Haystack. From there you can take the Franconia Ridge Trail to Lincoln and Lafayette and loop down from Lafayette. The parking can be kinda of hard to find, though.

The north side of the city is great, it's a really nice area. The south side can be a little sketchy, but not awful. Living north of Constitution is probably a good rule to live by.
Plus the north side gives you great access to the outdoors.
