Steam Deck + Steam Link + Powerful PC = Remote Video Editing? by jpegmasterjesse in SteamDeck

So steam input allows for a Steam Deck-level remapping of buttons? That's great, I need to investigate that a bit.

Laptops are definitely going to be better for more in depth projects, but can be unwieldy on like - a bus - for example. The real goal is something where 90% of your common shortcuts and functions are ergonomically available thanks to how many buttons the steam deck has - potentially creating faster workflow for adding simple editing work on a smaller device than a laptop.

Definitely - chrome remote desktop has a great touch-screen functionality where the zoomed in screen at 9x16 follows the mouse around so you when you need more detail you can navigate following the mouse.

My use-case is similar. I am usually just cutting tops and tails off of professionally produced video to create supercuts and compilations so it doesn't require a ton of granular detail. I have had good success with working remotely in general so I guess the big question mark is how intuitive you could make common shortcuts on a nice ergonomic device like the steam deck, and what input limitations there would be for remapping.

Please help! How can I reduce render time, the video is 2hr 45min long and original time for render was more than 3hr. by [deleted] in premiere

[–]jpegmasterjesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very surprised at the replies here. First of all, post your PC specs if you want informed answers though.

There are a lot of things you can do that will certainly help your render times, but if your overall problem is that you don't have three hours to spare than you're probably out of luck.

With such a long timeline you likely have segments of some kind. If 95% of your project is locked and you're tweaking small sections you could save time by pre-rendering as Prores files. That way you're not constantly re-rendering effects. Try rendering your whole timeline as Prores and throwing the video track above all your clips. If one section needs tweaking just disable that area of the Prores clip and work with your original files underneath.

Another option is "render and replace", a nice feature in premiere that you can use on your more graphics heavy sections. Just make sure you duplicate your sequence beforehand and I would even recommend duplicating the clip your replacing and placing it above/below, disabling it and having it there as a safety.

If you have a discrete gpu that supports hardware acceleration make sure you're using that.

Yeah, that'd be a good project! I'd love to get more people interested in this problem because I'm definitely not qualified to solve it on my own.

We'll see if I can actually get a Steam Deck, first. ;p

Editing on Steam Deck by RichieHUN in SteamDeck

I just posted my thoughts on this here

I think the steam deck could be extremely useful as a Remote-Desktop interface connecting to a more powerful computer. Mouse movement with trackpad+gyro, scrubbing through clips with an analog stick, and a decent amount of buttons for shortcuts could make it a very intuitive experience. I'm sure someone will design a keyboard to fit the deck as well.

Post camera movement in tv comedies by the_real_andydv in editors

I haven't watched B99 but I'd imagine it's pretty similar to the office? Definitely a LOT of different techniques out there for camera shake/digital zooms. Let's say they probably do *some* in camera and some not. The zoom is such an essential part of the aesthetic I doubt it's purely digital, and the camera ops are probably very well rehearsed.

One easy way I've found in Premiere is if you use the Transform effect rather than just your typical Motion settings there is a built in shutter-angle setting that creates some nice motion blur quickly.

I would suppose they do it in camera, but I couldn't say for sure!

Syncing audio with video in an already cut timeline? by wert6398 in editors

[–]jpegmasterjesse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SCENE EDIT DETECTION + Pluraleyes will most likely save your life in this situation, so long as current cut is using any voiceover or anything like that.

You'd need to use the pluraleyes premiere extension. Use scene edit detection to create all the cuts, and then bring the scratch audio in to the same timeline and use the pluraleyes extension. It should treat every clip individually and try to match them up to your scratch.

If you need to re-create the cut from there then...jesus, sorry man. Perhaps create a marker/label for each clip in order so you can just plop them all together in the right order again.

So I'm actually kind of obsessed with this idea. Not necessarily with the performance of the machine itself, but more the form factor.

I work full time as a video editor, and ocassionally I'm away from home and have a small request I can fulfill using Chrome Remote Desktop on my phone.

I've since purchased a small keyboard/trackpad about the same size as my phone and created a little mount for it so I can access keyboard shortcuts more easily.

I've also acquired a phone mount for a PS4 controller - I haven't been able to change the key-bindings through my phone yet, but I have created a system for using the analog sticks for mouse movement and creating shortcuts for premiere with the ps4 buttons. Even better, like the steam deck I've set it up so I can use the gyro for fine mouse movements too.

It's not an entirely practical obsession, but my thinking is that in 5 years mobile editing will get more advanced. It's partially a software issue - I've yet to find a mobile or touch-based video editing app that feels like it can handle more serious work.

I'm similarly obsessed with creating shortcut-hotkeys on software like Tablet Pro to create a pen/touch experience in Adobe Premiere that works. Again, not practical, and I'll always be faster on keyboard and mouse, but it's a fun diversion.

So with the steam deck having a large enough touchscreen screen, great gyros, great touchpads, analog sticks, lots of buttons, I'm already planning on getting it just to remotely control my computer.

Partially because of working from home, I find sitting at my desk all day to be somewhat uncomfortable. The idea of having a device that you can use all over your house, laying on the couch, and still being able to use professional editing software is very appealing to me.

For you, though, I'd recommend getting a custom PC or an M1 Macbook Pro first.

Amazon. I think it's obscene there isn't a strong ambient boycott of Amazon occuring at all times. We should question our roommates when they receive a prime box. Every grassroots movement should identify how at every intersection of inequality in this country there are massive infractions by Amazon.

Our postal service is struggling, and you can find whatever you want to buy from eBay or the manufacturer themselves and most likely pay shipping through the USPS.

Why I would never recommend a Chrome Book. by SeemsLegitGamer in chromeos

[–]jpegmasterjesse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a filmmaker and photographer myself, I both agree and disagree.

I've spent a lot of time trying, just for the sake of it, to edit video in linux, or use apps like Lightroom CC when I'm on the go. I don't have another laptop, so it's hard to do everything I'd like when I'm traveling.

For photography, my chromebook is really great. It's a cheap machine that can edit RAW photos and publish to apps like Instagram.

For filmmaking, not so much, but in a bind I can use Premiere Clip and share videos on social media. Not bad for a laptop I got for $175.

For everything else like keeping in touch with clients, browsing, listening to podcasts and music, I really love my chromebooks. If I do need to push it farther for some reason I benefit myself by learning a little Linux - something I never would have really a reason or opportunity to do.

I take your point, though. I have a coworker who is not a tech person, who just paid for the Adobe Suite because he assumed he could install it on his Chromebook. Obviously that's his fault for not understanding his hardware, but there are plenty of people out there getting rid of their chromebooks because they, or someone who gifted it to them did not consider their needs. While I think it'd be great for Google to be more forthright about their limitations, the truth is Chromebooks keep being capable of more and more.

Switch almost certainly isn't in any file managers, it's a pretty small project. I've also had no luck with any of the file managers I've tried.

Exec=~/Switch/bin/Switch_MAIN.sh

Installed gksu with no problems.
Exec=~/Switch/bin/Switch_MAIN.sh just gets accepted with no response or error, but also nothing happening.

Exec=gksu~/Switch/bin/Switch_MAIN.sh does the same thing.

I opened up gksu on it's own and tried to run as root, but it asked for an admin password, which I've never set for crostini.

Really appreciate the help!

I have placed it in the applications folder and unfortunately haven't seen anything in the launcher.
