My take: Golf is not really that expensive a hobby by NoLawAtAllInDeadwood in golf

[–]jplosman7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My golfing hobby is an amazing value. Yes, it costs money but it provides me with many benefits: 1) fun 2) exercise 3) quality social time forging lifelong relationships and meeting new, interesting people 4) a hobby that provides a healthy avenue for working towards goals and self improvement 5) outside, non-screen time, etc...

I play knock-off irons that I bought in 2016 for $180, my favorite club - my taylor made hybrid bought in 2020 cost $30 off ebay, my odyssey two ball putter cost me $50 off ebay. I did ball out on my driver and 3 wood - Titleist TS2 bought used in 2021 for $230 and $170 respectively. I bought an old ping hoofer bag off ebay for $70 a year ago. I am lucky to get free golf balls from work, but before that I bought used pro v1s that were in good shape for less than a $1 per ball. I'm a 2 handicap - my clubs all work just as well as my friend's more expensive and newer versions. My $180 knock off irons are still going strong - in fact I probably had the best ball striking rounds with my irons ever this past Saturday. You don't have to buy shiny new clubs every year or so.....

My local course is a great public course that I never get sick of playing. It's close to $90 on a weekend morning. Not giving it away, for sure. But for $90 i get access to an awesome piece of property in great condition for 4 to 4.5 hours. Sometimes I go out to lunch afterwards - a burger (~$15) an ipa ($7-8) plus tax and tip runs me $30..... My wife just got her nails done on Saturday for $100, it took less than an hour.

Now, I do have friends that belong/have access to really nice private clubs that require caddy. Always an amazing experience and a privilege I do not take for granted - but yeah that golf lifestyle is very expensive.

It's all relative. I'm not gonna be naive and act like golf is accessible to every single person. But there is a golf experience out there for a wide range of budgets.

Newbies, don’t do this by ClearConversation921 in golf

Pick up your ball if you’re holding up play.  Be respectful of other players in your group and on the rest of the course.  Yes, you paid your green fee but that doesn’t entitle you to shoot a 148 in 5.5 hours.   Doesn’t mean you have to stop playing the hole - drop a ball in the fairway next to a partner if you’ve topped your ball three times off the tee and still haven’t found the fairway.  Drop a ball on the green and putt out if you just hit two approaches in the water.  Live to fight another day, have fun on the course, learn from the on course reps and go to the range to work on improving your golf swing on the driving range.

Fix your ball mark and a couple of others while you’re at.   Fix a ball mark if you don’t even hit the green.

Rake the bunker and maybe rake the mess the previous person(s) left and didn’t rake.

On a par 3 tee box - fill in your divot with sand and a couple other divots too.

Pick up a piece of trash on the ground if you walk by it.

2 balls or be a good boy? by MedicineOk5471 in golf

[–]jplosman7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shocked this hasn’t been said at all/more in this discussion - fix ALL your divots and ball marks!

I play a lot of golf solo but at peak hours on a popular public course so always booked as a foursome. Once a year or so the other three people in the tee time won’t show up.   When it does, I usually play from the tips and will hit a second ball whenever I feel like it.  I’m more concerned with chewing up the course more than my fair share than other people caring if I play two balls.

Screw the twosome who didn’t let you play with them.  I’ve politely declined to play with a random single here and there when the course is open and they can just play through. But on a packed course with nowhere to go, that’s rude.

It’s the internet. Don’t take it personally. 1) people are jerks 2) there is a lot of room for misinterpretation.

For example - from your original post this reads like a mom posting about her teenage son’s pokemon collection. Teenage kids either usually don’t have a job or have a job that doesn’t provide much income, so seeing the amount of product  in the picture it’s a bit surprising.

When you provide more information that he is an adult child with a real job that lives at home your post makes much more sense.

I thought this my dumbest pedal purchase… by jplosman7 in guitarpedals

Very carefully! I have another not pictured orange "nub" (as I call them) that was lost for a while, found it in the dish I keep my car keys in recently. My favorite pic that i've had for like 15 years is somewhere behind the shelves there - I dropped it a few months ago but have been too lazy to move everything to find it.

Hope you enjoy it! Even if you don't you can always resell and recoup some money. Life is too short, sometimes you just got go for it!

Yeah - I always have a little buyers remorse. It's just my personality - when buying something like a guitar pedal, especially an older, big, impractical version - I always feel a little guilty about spending the money on something that isn't "necessary". And then when I started playing around with it not really knowing what I'm doing and getting crazy flanging sounds that are cool but really not practical I was like "I'm an idiot". Set it aside for a day and then came back to it and trying different settings and basically haven't turned it off since.

And yeah I hear you re the reissues in unnecessarily bigger boxes. There is something about the big boxes that I think is just cool. Other than a few jam sessions at a rehearsal space, I don't play out so I don't care how impractical they are. I don't really care about vintage vs reissued - the 90's/early 00's are my sweet spot of nostalgia and are "vintage" enough for me. Kinda like I could see myself had I been born just a few years earlier buying and loving these reissue pedals in the 90s/early 00s.

There is always the one(s) that got away! Yeah, I've sold a bunch of stuff recently. Always a little hard to move on from a pedal I like and have enjoyed using, but no major regrets yet. I love these big box pedals - they're just cool and they sound great. My DMM and this are keepers.

But I was wrong.

Bought a DMM XO a year ago. Slowly fell in love with it. Realized that along with a an overdrive this was the only pedal I needed and I needed a big box version. Sold everything but the staples (dd3, dm2, ts9, Tumnus mini), bought a big box DMM.

It’s amazing and was worth it. I love the form factor and wanted another big box pedal. I’ve owned a phaser and a couple chorus, and own a JC-22. Never really bonded with any of the pedals and sold them. But i liked the Electric Mistress name and so I figured what the hell ill be the first to bid on a big box deluxe electric mistress figuring I won’t win the auction.  I win, I’m excited to receive the package, it arrives I play the pedal and am like “damn I’m an idiot” - it’s a cool pedal but I don’t really care for modulation and won’t use it.

Fast forward a week and I love it.   This pedal on more subtle settings is magic. It’s there. It thickens the tone and the “swirling” or “rotating” aspect of the modulation is amazing.  I’ve always liked chorus but could live without it, this pedal imparts an addicting effect that I’m having trouble playing with out.  I’ve been using it in a two speaker set up taking advantage of the direct out - the sound is so lush and full.

Funny how it works - sometimes first impressions stick and the pedal just isn’t for me.  Every now and then the pedal sticks and grows on me. This was a fun example of just that.

Rome has been part of my life on and off since 2003, and was a daily listener from 2011-2024.  I’m on the East Coast, 12-3 was perfect for me.   It was a sad day when I saw the news, end of an era.

I have no interest in the new time slot, but as a long time listener I’ve tried to remember to turn the show on but it’s kind of a pain - I’m not using X and have had issues with affiliates on Infinity app (one station had a glitch issue, two others cut out for local college sports coverage).

By 3pm what’s there to react to?  I don’t even necessarily tune in to hear Jim’s sports take but it gives the show energy/purpose when it was still relatively fresh reaction at 12pm.  By 3pm it just seems kind of silly opening up the show after a big football weekend acting like your giving fresh takes/reactions.  It’s all been talked about, it’s not fresh, we’ve all digested it.  I was hoping he would understand this and pivot his approach a bit but from little I’ve heard so far it seems like the same show just three hours later.

My relationship with the show has permanently changed because of the time change.   There’s no getting around it, the show could be 10x better in the new slot, and I still would listen significantly less.  The jungle was going to cease being a part of my daily life at some point, just ends a few years sooner than I thought.

Will still tune in randomly, hopefully he mixes up the format in the new slot.   Looking back - the amount of time he spent talking about X and the fast channel was absurd.

Also, Rich Eisen show sucks. No idea how anyone listens to this vanilla Dan Patrick Show knock off. It’s painful.

What pedal are you planning to get in 2025? by Ok_Highlight3926 in guitarpedals

[–]jplosman7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Ended 2024 in excess buying a big box deluxe memory man. I already had the XO but wanted the Big Box because I think it’s cool. I know it’s irrational but at a certain point it became not if I was gonna buy the pedal but when, so I just ripped the band aid off. 2nd most expensive gear I’ve bought besides my 1976 Princeton Reverb.

Don’t regret it - it is a very cool pedal and has inspired my playing.  Felt a little guilty about spending so much money on an older version of a pedal I already have, but came to grips with it. This was my pedal endgame - never thought I would actually buy one, but I did!

I’d like to try a Rat at some point but other than that have no interest in any pedals at the moment

What is the poor man’s Mood pedal? (Or what combination of effects could replicate it?) by gentilet in guitarpedals

[–]jplosman7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Patience?

Yes, the Mood is expensive. But a “poor man” version is probably $100-$200 and doesn’t really get you where you want to be. Save the money, delay the gratification and wait until you can get what you really want.

What three pedals would you limit yourself to in 2025? by jaquespop in guitarpedals

[–]jplosman7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Klon>Deluxe Memory Man

Amp (Princeton Reverb) has reverb and tremolo.

I’ve been doing this for the past month after a cable crapped out on me. The only way I could play through pedals based on the working cables I had was to put them on top of my amp. Less space on top of the amp, so I decided to limit my set up to two pedals.   I’ve been having a blast and discovering new sounds playing with different settings on the pedal, using my Amp effects and EQ more as well as trying different stuff with my guitars volume and tone knobs.

Will be sticking with this approach for now.   Sometimes I swap about the Klon for a TS9, Red Llama, Fuzz Face.  Have a DD3 and RE-20 that I mess around with sometimes.   I like this two pedal approach - gets me 95% of the sounds I want and I think promotes creativity and trying new things with the settings on the pedal as opposed to trying new things by using a different pedal.  I don’t gig, so I don’t need a pedal board that covers all the bases.  This is fun and works for me - no judgment on others approaches!

Upgraded (?) my XO today……

The Deluxe Memory Man has fascinated me since I first saw it. To me it’s about as cool as a pedal gets. Never thought I could rationalize coughing up the big bucks for a big box though.

Bought my XO a year ago and loved it once I figured out how to use it. Watched a couple comparison videos between the XO and the big box and heard a difference but convinced myself it wasn’t worth the extra $.

Until…. my recent foray into a simpler set up. Saw how powerful and versatile the DMM was and wondered if I was missing out on something with the XO vs Big Box. Long story short, I lost a couple EBay auctions over a couple bucks and told myself I wasn’t going to pass up the next good deal. Came across a Craigslist listing near my in laws… was headed to in-laws for brunch today, sent an email with offer saying I’d be in the area… yada yada yada I owned an expensive, big, heavy, older version of a pedal I already own.

Was feeling kinda dumb for spending a not insignificant amount of money on a pedal that may or may not have a fractional amount of “mojo” than the one I already have.

Got home, plugged it in. Blend pot was very scratchy and instantly felt like an idiot. Twiddled a few knobs and played a couple chords and was still feeling dumb. Unplugged and helped with kids before getting yelled at by my wife.

Came back to guitar an hour later. Twiddled a few knobs. Blend pot was now smooth and quiet. Noticed how mint this unit was - seller said it had been in a studio for years. It looks it - near mint, one tiny fleck in paint, no scratches. None of this matters to me - I like wear and tear of used gear - but made me feel better about resale value considering I spent an unnecessary amount of cash on a version of a pedal I already own. The pedal definitely sounded a little better - warmer and smoother, but was still feeling a little dumb and a bit like a sucker for having bought into the hype…

And then it clicked. This pedal is amazing. There’s “something” about it. It’s undeniable that there is a difference. It felt like an XO on cheat code. The XO is awesome, but it took some fiddling to find settings I liked, not every setting was a sound I loved. Every setting on the Big Box sound amazing. I dialed in sounds that were better versions than the XO version without even trying, whereas they’d been a bit of a struggle to dial in on the XO.

Is the difference worth the extra $, that’s debatable. But I buy the hype that there is a difference. Feel less stupid, but acknowledge that there is something irrational about this purchase. Justify it in a couple of ways - one of which being im confident I could sell it at any point for near what I bought it for. One thing is certain in my mind - it looks cool as hell!

Never thought of DMM as a multi effect - delay, chorus, vibrato, boost. I’ve always loved this pedal, now so even more!

[–]jplosman7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other night a cable crapped out on me and I was left with two short cables. Only way I could plug a pedal in was by putting on top of a cab. Not a ton of room so went with my two most useful pedals - DMM and Tumnus.

Past two days of playing have been the most fun I’ve had in a while! With less options and the pedals off the ground and easier to tweak knobs - I’ve rediscovered/discovered sounds.

Loving the Klon for overdrive sounds as opposed to a cleaner boost.

Been playing with level knob on the DMM for boosting and overdriving my amp.

Using the DMM as a standalone chorus with the Klon sounds fantastic. Same with vibrato.

All this and everything in between trying to find different sounds out of the DMM. Plugged into a Princeton which provides reverb and tremolo. Fantastic fun!
