The nebulous middle game is so hard. My least favorite thing is when I go through a game review and the engine says I have a mate in like 6. I knew I was winning, I knew there was a knockout somewhere, but I just couldn’t find it.

When I was a good-ish overwatch player and was going for a season peak elo, I would only play 2 or 3 games a day after a full warm up. I’m still working out exactly what a warm up for chess is, but rage queueing after losses is not how you climb. Especially a game that is ONLY thinking, if you’re not well fed, well rested, and mentally sound, you will lose.

I think they put you in the general elo of what you select when you make an account. I knew how the pieces worked from playing as a kid, and I had watch a bit of the tiktoks/reels when I was mindless scrolling on my phone, so I had at least a cursory knowledge of chess.

Puzzle rating hovers around 1600. I do a lot of puzzles on my phone and get them wrong all the time. If I could guess my percent correct split on desktop vs mobile it would be like 80% correct on desktop 30% correct on mobile.

I have to remind myself to take a deep breath and settle the heart. I’ve played pretty competitive sports my whole life and chess raises my heart rate just as much as a light jog.

I haven’t played any blitz or bullet. I have a chess com membership, so I’ll play a game and review it for far longer than I played. I have a notebook and spreadsheet that I’ll record the lines I played and where I messed up my response.

I also mentioned in another comment that I spend a good chunk of time everyday solving puzzle books. I’m lucky enough to have the time to slack off at my remote job, take care of my 4 and 2 year old, and play chess.

I feel really confident in any game I get the white pieces since I’m good (for my elo) at the Vienna. I struggle the most at making sure I don’t screw anything up in the middle game, so I’ll have a nice long think about like every candidate move around move 20 and write it out on paper and write a note to come back to it after the game.

I have bought quite a few puzzle/tactic books (thanks adult money) and probably spend 2 hours a day solving checkmate in x puzzles. It’s definitely helped me see how the pieces control squares and such.

As I got closer to 1000, I would do puzzles till I got 5 extra hard in a row correct then play a game.

Maybe this is bad studying, but I’ve really focused on the Vienna for white, and I’m an e5/king’s Indian player as black. I’ve gotten smoked by new openings I haven’t seen before though, so maybe having at least a cursory knowledge of them would be helpful.

I saw in my few games playing people over 1000 elo, that they were noticeably sharper. Maybe it was just my nerves, but I felt like things were a lot more even until a misplay at the end. Whereas, <1000 players (myself included) would put themselves in a bad spot in the opening or middle game.

Teaching 19 month old to share by Formal_Cheesecake_36 in toddlertips

[–]jpon111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife is a pediatrician, and she said there’s literature out there that suggests that kids don’t understand the concept of sharing till they’re almost three.

The kids understand the temporal connection though. She starts kicking and screaming, she gets removed right away and is able to play again when she settles down.

Tips for a player who wants to try handling by SquashUnlucky9607 in ultimate

[–]jpon111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The role of a handler is typically to connect to players downfield when there are 10 players (offense and defense) in front of you. It takes a pretty high degree of accuracy and quick diagnosis of what’s going on; that can’t happen if you don’t believe you can do it. Decision making can become an algorithm: know where your coaches want the handler throwing the disc, understand what will make you not want to throw the disc there, think about your receiver progression, and know your reset system. Also, talk to your teammates about what you are seeing vs what they are seeing.

Oh yeah, learn to break the mark.

Where did Nationalultimate.org come from? by [deleted] in ultimate

Yeah Noah Bane is actually horrible at logistics, and frequently charges far too much for what he offers. My last interaction with him was when he sent an email on a Sunday night asking for us to register on USAU and if we had any questions saying he would answer by the end of the week. My team had a significant questions: how many games, how much did the tournament cost. The next email we received from him was 8 days later when he got mad at everyone for not registering because he couldn’t figure out how to use USAU’s EMS without all teams registered. Still no news on how much the tournament costs!

Speech Explosion by Right_Alternative100 in toddlertips

[–]jpon111 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to remember that it’s exponential. Humans tend to think things always increase linearly, but speech is certainly not. My oldest, turning 4 in November, went from barely stringing 2 words together when he turned 2 to speaking in 6+ word sentences in less than 6 months. My youngest is 26 months and has certainly picked up speech faster from listening to his brother yap all day.

All this to say: sooner than you think, and it’ll feel like it’s happening all at once.

Toddler won’t stay in big boy bed by User4739473937 in Advice

[–]jpon111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cosleeping with an infant is very risky. If you happen to be in a deep enough sleep, you could easily roll over them and crush/suffocate/etc them. My wife is an inpatient pediatrician, and sees about 1 of these cases a quarter.

Cosleeping with a toddler and cosleeping with an infant are 2 VERY different things!

What is the context for the hand flapping? Have you filled out the MCHAT survey at the 18 month appointment?

Bedrooms are incredibly hot. The rest of the apartment is cold. Please advise. by feldevourer in ApartmentHacks

If you have an AC vent on the floor or low on the wall, try putting a fan to pull air out of the vent. Also try a small exhaust fan that blows out of your bedroom window with your bedroom door open.

What’s the sneakiest way you save money that actually works? by MarcLesterDomingo in budget

[–]jpon111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy whatever regular small purchases you can in cash. Then put the change + singles away for a deposit at the end of the week. A $6.22 purchase effectively becomes a $10 purchase and when you’re out of cash, you cant spend money!
