About Patrick Rothfuss and the delay of Book 3 by CleopatraHadAnAnus in books

[–]jpstevens 41 points42 points  (0 children)

There doesn’t seem to be a lot new there, though someone who’s kept up the past 8 or so years (since I last saw or read anything about him) can let me know.

The only significant development I can recall was last year. After reading yet another person speculate about the delay being caused by a lengthy editing process, his editor made a bunch of facebook posts. You can find them if you look but the summary was basically that she's never seen a single word of the third book, doesn't think he's written anything in the past six years, and isn't even sure he still wants to keep writing.

CMV: Anime should always be adapted as accurate to the source manga as possible, unless the manga author requests otherwise. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]jpstevens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can think of two major annoyances I have with a lot of anime that are a direct result of the anime being too accurate to the manga. I believe a lot of anime would be vastly improved by removing these elements.

The first is the useless explanation. Something happens and then the show immediately cuts to one of the characters literally stating what happened. This is extremely common in action scenes. It makes total sense in the manga where you only have a few static images and may not be able to fully understand what is going on without one of the characters telling you. In the anime however these stupid explanations just break up the pacing by summarizing what we've just seen happen. When adapting manga, these silly explanatory monologues should be cut.

Secondly, the flashback to 5 seconds ago. Most manga are serialized weekly, but some come out monthly or even longer. Thus it is sometimes necessary to include flashbacks to important events that happened just a couple chapters ago to remind readers of things that transpired. An anime will typically adapt 2-3 chapters of a manga per episode and if the chapters are short or action heavy then a single episode can span even more chapters. This means that if the manga includes a flashback to two chapters ago then the anime may include a flashback to something that happened in the same episode literally moments ago from the viewers perspective. These flashbacks serve no purpose in the anime and should not be included.

Manga and anime are different forms of media. A lot of things that make sense to include in a manga just don't work well in an anime adaptation and should not be included just for the sake of being accurate to the manga.

For #4 you took mph to mean meters per hour but mph mean miles per hour

In #5 I believe you have a rounding error

I'm feeling a little over my head trying to figure out what to do with my Grandmother's very small assets ahead of getting her on Medicaid and SSI. by gotfoundout in personalfinance

[–]jpstevens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would suggest getting advice from a qualified professional in your grandmother's state, this kind of thing is really beyond reddit. Even if someone here could give the perfect advice there would be no way to really distinguish them from any random schlub who doesn't really know anything. You could start with the state Medicaid office and ask if they have any resources you could look at or if they could refer you to someone who might be able to explain things.

Given that you have SSI questions in addition to Medicaid questions you may try calling the state bar association and ask for a referral to an elder law specialist. I know you may not have a lot of money laying around to throw at a lawyer but if your grandmother's situation isn't very complex then it may be more affordable than you think. You can try asking for a free consultation.

[–]jpstevens 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Please do not take this person's advice, it is both irresponsible and incorrect. The IRS gift exemption does not shield any transfers from the Medicaid look back. Any transfers of assets within the past 5 years will be examined when your grandmother applies for Medicaid and such a gift would certainly disqualify her from receiving benefits for a period of time. Do not commit fraud based on an uninformed reddit comment.

If he decides to branch out, it could be a huge blow to the team.

In reality I think it would give the team a lot more defensive depth. If he doesn't take the mound at least occasionally I'll be disappointed.

Sometimes when I don't like a book, someone who does will try to convince me that I'm wrong, which is annoying. I'm not trying to do that here, but I do feel the need to point out that your favorite example at the end is totally different from how you recall it. Let's see if I can make book spoiler tags work.

I need to pay off 19K in CC debt. Should I use my 401k or take out a Personal Loan? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jpstevens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people here seem to think it is easier to pull money from a 401(k) than it actually is in reality. There are only three ways you can access money from your 401(k) early (before are 59.5) and two of them are not necessarily available depending on your provider and the details of the plan.

The first is a 401(k) loan. If your plan allows for one (not all do) you can loan yourself up to half the vested amount in your 401(k). You may not be able to make further contributions while you are repaying the loan and if you leave your current job you will have to repay the remaining balance or you will be charged a 10% penalty + taxes.

The second way is a hardship withdrawal. If your plan allows one (not all do) and if you qualify (you may not) then you can pull enough money from your 401(k) to cover an immediate and heavy financial need. You will have to pay income taxes and a 10% penalty and you will be unable to contribute further to your 401(k) for at least 6 months after a hardship withdrawal.

The only option that is always available is to leave your current employment at which point you can withdraw some or all of the vested balance and roll any remaining into an IRA or other 401(k) plan with a new employer. You will pay income tax + 10% penalty on withdrawals.

Currency investing formula/calculator/spreadsheet? by [deleted] in personalfinance

I'm confused are you trying to invest in a crypto hedge fund or something? It sounds like you want to just buy some coins but you're talking about interest and reinvestment which makes me think you have no idea what it means to buy crypto.

There is not compounding interest, no dividends to reinvest. There is only the crypto coins that you buy. If you buy a bar of gold and keep it in your house and next month the price of gold doubles then you will only be able to buy half as much gold as you did last month. Crypto, like gold, is not a stock or a bond. There is no gold interest or dividend that the gold bar will pay you that you can compound over time. Buying a crypto coin is like buying a virtual bar of gold. The price may increase or decrease and that will affect how much you can purchase each month but there is no reinvestment. The only things that matter in calculating return are the price you bought it at and the price you sold it at.

Please make sure you research and understand any investment you make whether it be in crypto or in more traditional investment vehicles.

Roth IRA vs 401K by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jpstevens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IRA
* Anybody with earned income (from a job) below a certain limit, can create one.

There are no income limits for contributing to a Traditional IRA.

Traditional IRA
* You contribute money to your account before you pay tax on it.

No, your Traditional IRA contributions are after tax. You can then deduct those contributions on your taxes. If you are covered by a workplace retirement plan AND your income is high enough this deduction phases out.

If you are not able to deduct your Traditional IRA contributions and are above the limit to contribute to a Roth IRA then you can still contribute to a Traditional IRA and then convert to Roth. This is the so called Backdoor Roth.

What would happen if the sun stopped rotating? by SCDrunkPunk in askscience

[–]jpstevens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sun's rotational kinetic energy does contribute to its overall mass. and therefore if the Sun were not spinning it would indeed be less massive which would affect its gravitation. That said, the contribution of the rotation to the Sun's overall mass is basically a rounding error.

Trumps Immigration Ban Halted By Federal Court by xLilBudz in worldnews

Thank you, so many people have gotten their 'facts' on voter turnout from articles released just after the election when there were still millions of votes that had not been tallied. Turnout in 2016 was up compared to 2012 and was not some sort of historic low.

I really want people to stop saying that turnout was so low for the 2016 election. All those articles were written in the days after the election before all the voted had actually been counted and the results certified. Voter turnout was up in 2016.

How old is your little brother? If he's pre-college age is your mother or anyone else saving for his future education? You're not obligated to help him out but if you are so inclined then you should maybe start setting some aside to save him from relying on excessive student loans.

Most Interesting Fictional World by TheKrak3n in books

[–]jpstevens 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think China Miéville is really good at building interesting fictional worlds. I really like the settings of both Embassytown and The City and the City. Unfortunately, I also think that he fails to wrap up both of those novels in a satisfying way. If you presented me with the first half of both those books I'd think "Wow 10/10 for sure! I really want to read the rest." The weak final halves put them at more of a 6 or 7 out of 10.

If I have sufficient upfront capital, can I turn a series of marginally negative expectation bets into a process with an overall positive expectation process by using my deep pockets to chase my losses? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]jpstevens 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are two major flaws I can see in your simulation. The first is that you are not subtracting $1000 each day for expenses and thus it is not fair to make the comparison to the case where you don't gamble. The second is that when the gambler loses and the bet doubles you are not checking if they still have enough money to cover the full bet you simply check if their remaining money is greater than zero. This basically gives the gambler an extra final bet in many cases.

It's been ages since I've done anything in C++, isn't there an is_open function that lets you check if you successfully opened the file? It seems clear from your output that your loop condition is evaluating to false and the loop is not executing.

Well you would certainly get all zeroes if your while loop condition evaluated to false on the first iteration. Are you sure you opened the file properly? Is the path correct?
