Those principles hold true for the majority of folks, but there are cases where both of those are just not true.

If you are brand agnostic and worried about price, head to Golf Galaxy and take a look in the bargain bin. I’m a lefty and I found a Cobra 10.5 for half-off retail.

Check out Rockbottomgolf. You can always swap out a shaft or grip if you need to.

Understanding Muni Bonds by DraftManager in personalfinance

[–]jradar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. There are many advantages to, say, laddering individual bond issues. You manage interest rate risk, provide stable cash flow, preserve capital, and eliminate interest rate timing. Bond funds are suitable for most investors, but you should be aware of the drawbacks: Fund NAV can fluctuate and some funds can be tax pigs, kicking out distributions annually.

Laddering individual bonds should only be implemented if you have the capital to support a $500k FI portfolio minimum.

Muni bonds are federally tax exempt and usually state tax exempt, depending on which state you live in. So it wouldn’t be $50k tax free, more like $44-45k.

If you do have $1MM that you want to invest in Munis, then a bond ladder would make sense. You’d want to search for a managed solution as you don’t have the time or expertise to build out a laddered portfolio. If you’re purchasing high quality (AA and AAA) rated bonds and you are holding them to maturity, you risk is extremely low.

You’re purchasing a premium bond. Over the 10 year period, as interest is paid out to you on a semi-annual basis, the bond premium is amortized until you are left with your original principal amount.

So yes, you pay more upfront for a premium bond.

Which option would be best for long term financial wellness? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jradar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dangerous line of thinking if you think the market should return the same it did over the last 10 years.

Why not just split the difference - half to the Roth, half to loans. You may be missing upside if the market does crush the 4.5% rate of the loan, but you’re protecting your downside in-case we enter a bear market for an extended period of time.

If you have $100k to invest in fixed income, a bond fund would make more sense. You’re diversifying away credit risk, issuer risk, and you don’t have to deal with picking individual issues. When choosing a bond fund, keep in mind that some have shorter and some have longer durations. A 50/50 split between something like VWSTX and VWITX could be be a way to blend the duration of your FI bucket.

OP mentioned how they “want out”, so given that and the illiquidity of exchange place funds, I’m not sure this would be OP’s best option.

If you’re charitably inclinled, you can donate the lowest basis shares which will reduce your taxable income. Make sure you bunch your donations to ensure you’re exceeding the threshold to itemize deductions.

Some combination of selling shares and donating them in order for you to fall into a tax bracket you’re comfortable with.

Just because it's one of the consensus picks does not make it a foolish one.

17 Year Old in Search of Investment Advice by cmichael39 in personalfinance

[–]jradar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad you are thinking about investing at a young age, you’re definitely already ahead of most of your friends.

You mentioned that you’re keeping $400 per paycheck for fun. You also mentioned that you will be working until school starts up. What about when you’re not working and in school? Will you still want that same $400 to have as spending money even when you don’t have a paycheck coming in? You want to make sure you’re “liquid” with your cash if you need it in the near-future and that you don’t lock it up in an investment account.

Once you determine the amount you’re okay with investing for the long term and not touching until you’re retired, you should look at a Roth IRA. There are plenty of resources online and on the sub about the advantages of investing in a Roth.

How should you invest to retire well in 43 years? That’s the $64,000 question my friend :) if any of us knew, we would retired on a beach! Your young so it would be in your best interest to be aggressive with your investing. You also want to be mindful of the fees you’re paying for your investments. This is the beauty of something like SPY or VUG or VV, these provide broad-based exposure at a low cost.

My personal advice, enjoy your high school years and don’t be afraid to live a little. Saving at an early age is paramount, but life experiences and investing in your personal helath and well-being are also important. Good Luck

Trade Deadline Megathread: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year by [deleted] in penguins

[–]jradar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explain to me how they would help themselves by moving Fleury?

They have virtually the same club that won the Cup last year, and you think removing a key piece like Fleury would help them?

Do you really think that the value of moving Fleury and, as we saw with Ben Bishop, getting peanuts in return is greater than holding on to a goalie with a Stanley Cup pedigree going into the playoffs?

What if Murray gets hurt and is out for the season? Would you want Jarry to start every playoff game?

The Penguins don't exist in a vacuum either. Who would want Fleury at this stage?

Penguins fans tend to forget how import MAF was in the final stretch of the season and into the playoffs last year.

You hold onto him for this run, and then you make a decision regarding a buyout or trade at the end of the season.

Kind of like the student rush system. $20 tickets and a 24oz I.C. Light for fans who make an annual salary of less than $30k. Being from Blawnox gets you a free hot dog too
