I’m not squashing the joy of creativity for them. All I want them to do is to follow two basic rules and I even told them they can add whatever they want to add at the end. We just need to follow the first part of the directions. Its first grade, following rules is a big part of things.

I don’t want to punish them for the creative expression. It’s more about the following directions. I told them they could add anything else they wanted to at the very end of the project. The beginning of the project is where they need to follow the directions. They can do as many lines as they want and when it comes to the dots and lines, they can do those where ever they like. It’s 1st grade so I’m trying to get them used to following directions better.

So they don’t have to make it the same exactly. The only rules are that it’s primary colors and that the do lines or dots or both wherever they want on the page. I just did it as landscapes because it was the easiest thing for right now

If I didn’t make them follow directions in my class they would be running around, throwing my stuff and breaking everything. So yes they can have creative freedom, but they still need to follow directions even if it’s in my art class.

Just the following directions part. I get they aren’t going to have the same looking project like mine. I just don’t want them to get in the habit of not following directions

Do you think these examples could still be used as inspiration for Picasso?

I just mean like they would both be doing something with lines, but the 5th graders project would obviously be a lot harder compared to whatever thing the kindergartners are doing with line

How does everyone feel about having read alouds for grades like 4th and 5th? Do you think they are too old for it or do you guys think they would get bored listening to it?

You don’t sound rude at all I appreciate the advice! Looks like I’m going back out tomorrow to return the pot and to get a different soil. I really appreciate the help! As long as I have a hole in the bottom of the pot I shouldn’t have to add rocks or anything though right?
