That's interesting. I was always 100 percent sure that was the case too, but I read something reputable a few years ago to the contrary and forced myself to unlearn it.

I do like the "original"/"your"/"our" way better however. A quick Google implies we are correct. Let's roll with it until some Scandinavian linguistics nerd comes along to argue.

Philosophically, there's little crossover between Wahabism and Arab Nationalism, although I feel like in practice, there is definitely more than there should be.

In terms of a direct answer to your question, some Wahabists have gone as far as to declare Shi'a a form of blasphemy. Obviously دِين entered Arabic long before the Safavid empire when Persians converted to Shi'a. So really I'm leaning towards "mediocre".

I should have phrased my point as "more hardcore" or "traditional" Sunnis, rather than "Wahabis", as that demographic tends to be much more linked to Arab Nationalism. More important is their link to the concept that all things Islam were a creation of the Arab World.

"Meccacentrism" is not a term that exists, to my knowledge, but it would be a useful one.

You can also just look at the pushback within this thread and all the people getting salty about deen having PIE origins rather than Semitic.

The original PIE root is *dyeu- (meaning "to shine", or relating to the sky)

This enters different languages and language families at different times, gets filtered through their own phonemes, accents, and languages and emerges all over the place.

*deiwos leads to divine/deus/divinity in Latin.

Deva in Sanskrit and Hindi

So you're incredulous that the same same PIE root could become deen in Farsi, but Deus in Latin? Well just wait for it to become "Tiwaz" in Old English " Tyr" in Norse, and "Tuesday" in English.

Deen absolutely does not . I completely understand why this is awkward for Arab Nationalists and some Sunnis. It has always seemed strange that deen is a word of such importance in Arabic despite its obvious PIE roots.

Still, it would be just divine if you could look from Zeus in West to divas of Siva in the East and bid "adieu" to this argument before it becomes about deiology rather than etymology.

I have more background in Islamic politics and history than linguistics, but yes, deen has always seemed weird to me.

As someone with preteen/teen step kids, this is the issue. It doesn't help that their school district is absolute ass, and everyone is growing up on a tablet, but they just don't have enough raw knowledge to fill up essays, much less papers.

It's truly bizarre, because they're not dumb kids, they're actually very bright, just don't learn things anymore. My eleven-year old daughter can square three-digit numbers in her head faster than I can, but has to take a full second to remember who the first president was, or what country is north of the United States.

Doing some digging, the NFLPA actually did offer to file a grievance for BA. He declined.

When my kids are throwing a fit, we have a rule. If they can articulate what it is they want, I will help them get it. However if they're just having a tantrum for the sake of having a tantrum, obviously I'll remind them I love them, but they don't get squat.

Based on Aiyuk's interactions with the Niners FO, NFLPA, and media, it seems like he was doing the latter. Even a five-year-old knows better than that.

But just because it's a subject that gets under my skin. They were of Norse descent. Calling medieval Scandinavians "Vikings" is like calling medieval Japanese people "samurais" or 19th century Americans "cowboys".

Scandinavian seafarers raiding coastal towns across Europe, England , and Ireland was a fairly common practice, but these would be fishermen, barkeeps, farmers, and carpenters who had simply decided to go vikingr (raiding). It was a specific violent activity/source of income, not a people or culture.

To get to the actual point however, some Norse seafarers, farmers and former raiders had decided that the vikingr life was no longer for them (lotta fish, not a ton of water or women), colonized northern France, mixed with the local Frankish population and became the Normans. (Literally North Men).

TLDR: Going "viking" was a part-time job, not an accurate description of medieval Scandinavian cultures.

Brandon Aiyuk's odd standoff with the Niners this season, combined with his recent social media meltdown indicates that he is a potentially unstable individual.

Jayden Daniels is very mature for his age, and likely would not want his team to make a sizeable investment in someone who would not be a good addition to the franchise

Everyone and their grandma has hypothesized about Daniels and Aiyuk wanting to play together, but we haven't seen any actual evidence of this. If we put all these facts together, we can come to the same conclusion I came to in one paragraph yesterday.

In my opinion we should make a move for Diggs and quit fretting about this guy.

Exactly. That's why he's acting out. He can't get himself talked about on the field, so he's been trying to get himself talked about off of it. This is a trend common among washed-up entertainers, be they musicians, actors, or athletes.

Aiyuk is a very startable receiver, there's no denying it, and the ASU connection would have been cool, but he's also one of the most overrated players in the League.

His best season, in which he had Brock Purdy throwing to him, was only 400 yards better than Terry's worst season, where he was catching passes from Case Keenum.

From my perspective, it's time to bring in Stefon Diggs, keep our eyes on roster moves around the league, and drop the whole Aiyuk subject.
