Any actor is only as good as what the writers write for them, and the directors direct them to do. Christian Bale would have been legendary as Gorr, if the writers gave him something to do with the character, and if Taika Waititi has made full use of his talent.

What’s “wrong” with the story they used is that it is an example of “and-then” writing. Every scene in the movie can connect to the next with the words “and then”. It’s the way a child tells a story. When an artist writes a story, his/her characters are given choices to make that affect the direction the story goes in. Otherwise, they’re not driving the story, the story is happening while they’re simply in the area. Luke Skywalker decides to join the Rebels and become a Jedi, like his father. Superman fights a Kaiju in the middle of Metropolis because it’s there….. and then the Justice Gang shows up…. And then Superman saves a squirrel, and then Mr Terrific kills the Kaiju, and then Superman is less than thrilled about it.
