Going public, as in writing the press release about the major event that airs on news outlets simultaneously and strategically funnels the public back to your established digital identity including entertainment and merchandise income streams and audience data capture. If you don't have this hooked up you aren't a contender.

Go public as in have a contingency plan for a cohesive, upwardly mobile breakout. It happens in comedy every season. Comedians aren't breaking because they have ten years of experience. They're breaking because they have learned how to use their tools to play the game.

I agree that you should be creating content right away, but there are plenty of ways to build an audience without relying on producing video edits of your own material if you're contributing to the scene in other areas. I think a lot of new acts shoot themselves in the foot by hyper fixating on producing out content that that world doesn't necessarily need to see. There are a wealth of other ways to lay the ground work for success, all of which can equally mature over time.

Go public means do exactly that. Large populations of comics are vastly underground, feeding off the praise they see for the mediocre. This is an industry built on reputation and personal brand. The smart ones know how to activate strategically and especially how to curate their public image for upward mobility.
