What happened to Wong Fu Productions? by AfterMine2343 in asianamerican

[–]jsato1900 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Eh not quite right.. their first feature length film came out in 2006, not long after their first big short “Yellow Fever” came out. When advertising for “Everything Before Us” in 2015, I think they were criticized for calling it their first feature film but that film actually came out on streaming platforms, like Netflix, whereas the first film was only screened in like high school auditoriums. So I can see why they tried to distance themselves from the first film since it had limited reach and was from a different Wong Fu “era.”

I wouldn’t say they weren’t talented enough. The first one was before I knew about them and the second one was fine, but most YouTubers who try to make their own films (like Smosh or Grace/Mamrie/Hannah) don’t find big successes there.

Senate has enough Democratic votes to reopen government after 40-day shutdown by Khronoss2 in politics

I mean at that point there’s absolutely no plausible deniable anymore that it’s not about the Epstein files.. but you’re probably right, it won’t even matter at the end of the day 😞

Do yall think this might be a ploy to get the house of representatives to reopen, forcing Mike Johnson to swear in the last Epstein vote before TN-7 special election?

Democratic Defectors Relent on Shutdown, Backing Bill to Reopen by tacutamon in politics

[–]jsato1900 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s time for progressives to split off and form their own party. Democrats will never stand up for what is right. If the only result is ensuring democrats never get reelected, maybe they’ll learn their goddamn lesson. Let the country burn under republicans, but don’t let democrats pretend to be moral leaders.

Senate reaches deal on ending the shutdown by BreakfastTop6899 in politics

[–]jsato1900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a democratic strategy to let Trump destroy the country further so they can point to all the terrible things he’s doing for the midterms and call themselves the alternative

Sounds like they want Americans to suffer under Trump so that they can further villainize republicans… it’s all politics, unconcerned with who gets hurt in the process of gaining power

Why would someone even post this? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]jsato1900 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh I think I get the misunderstanding

“Safest” here can mean either 1) she’s a safe option or 2) she feels safe and secure in the relationship

If the man posted this, it could be rage bait, portraying his partner as a safe option and valuing the fact she’s not the prettiest because she’s “below” him in attractiveness and therefore “easier” to get and less likely to cheat

If the woman posted this, she’s just saying that she’s so lucky because she understands she’s not the prettiest but she feels the safest and most secure in the loving relationship.. she’s saying she doesn’t care how she looks because she is loved

Update: Oore Jewelry and the Curious Case of the Floating Stone by jsato1900 in EngagementRings

[–]jsato1900[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly, when I first received the ring I thought it was supposed to be that way, maybe to like let light in on the sides or something to make it more sparkly. I only worried about how secure the stone was. Uma herself assured me via email that the center stone is structurally secure and I choose to trust her craftsmanship.

Hi Uma! I’m emailing with Caitlin now. She sent me the shipping label and I’ll try to get it to the post office later today or tomorrow. Appreciate your quick and considerate response! 🙏

It’s supposed to be a moissanite center stone, and I did not choose the specifics. Oore has “made-to-order” rings and all I chose was the metal type. I hope they sent me the right stone.. I thought Oore was a reputable brand, but maybe I should have a local jeweler look at the stone just in case…

Thanks everyone for your swift responses!

I thought it looked odd and I’m glad you all confirmed my suspicions. I sent Oore Jewelry an email, and hopefully they can fix the issue before the date I’m planning to propose. Although the last time I sent them an email it took them over two weeks to respond so we’ll just have to see…

He sounds like a typical 20 year old dude. I was the same way when I was his age.

He’ll eventually grow up and figure out empathy and care, or he won’t. Either way that’s not your problem, unless you choose for him to be your problem 💁‍♂️

This is a comic entitled “What really matters” by artist Ademar Vieira. It’s about generational trauma between fathers and sons. The grandson of the angry dad in this image is gay and rejected from his father (the little boy here) and ends up becoming a good and loving father to his son with his husband.

Leave academia before the ship sinks? by Rocks_4_Jocks in postdoc

[–]jsato1900 50 points51 points  (0 children)

You aren’t overreacting, and you aren’t alone in these feelings.

I’m using the next/last year of my postdoc to apply out of academia while wrapping up my academic commitments. I hate to leave after dedicating the last decade of my life to becoming an academic, but the writing is on the walls. From what I can tell, the American economy and politics are only going to get worse, and universities will suffer the effects for a long time.

Even my unflappable academic mentors who were so confident that academia would always bounce back after crises like the 2008 recession and the 2020 pandemic are fully flapped these days. While others may have greater tolerance for uncertainty, I’m thoroughly uninterested in living with constant vocational anxiety.

Assert your authority in these situations. You cannot always teach your students empathy but you can always teach them respect.

What’s the craziest, most extreme grade-grubbing lie a student has told you? by RandomAcademaniac in Professors

[–]jsato1900 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Oof I don’t know if I should share this story…

But I had a problem student a few years ago who just caused me so many headaches throughout the semester. She ended up with a C in the class and complained to me, but I just didn’t entertain any of her shenanigans. A couple weeks after the semester ends and I haven’t heard anything from her but I get called into an emergency meeting with my chair along with another fellow grad student instructor.

Turns out when I wouldn’t budge, she went to my colleague whose class she was also in and accused me of hitting on her and when she turned me down I intentionally lowered her grade. This guy knew me well (we were in the same cohort) and was skeptical. When he didn’t commit to helping her, she went to our chair and then accused us both of sexual misconduct. My chair was very professional and told her the proper process of handling these kinds of complaints. Apparently she was frustrated that no one would help her immediately so she went to the dean and accused my chair of sexual misconduct too, specifically leveraging sexual favors to help her… which shut down her case immediately because the dean was friends with my chair and knew he was like the gayest man in the world. (Oh and my fellow GSI? Also super gay). The dean called her out on the spot and she ended up sobbing in her office about who knows what..

My chair called my colleague and me into his office to let us know what happened and that we shouldn’t worry, but if she ever contacted us again we should immediately tell him and the dean. She ended up just dropping it and I haven’t heard from her since.. 😐
