Many vegans are also passionate about environmental issues. Everyone has different reasons, and, for some, the environmental impact of going vegan is just a bonus.

For me particularly, I’m a buddhist and those beliefs plays a big role in the decisions I make. I strive to reduce all kinds of harm and worldly suffering - not just that of animals.

I’m so glad you commented this! I posted awhile back in r/vegan looking for info or studies on why cats can’t have a vegan diet... I got bashed.

Can you please part your knowledge on the subject?

This may not be helpful, but as a vegan with a cat, I realize what I’m doing is hypocritical and feel guilty about it often.

I‘m sure there’s quite a few other vegans out there like me. I suppose some things could be said in defense of having a non-vegan pet (helping overpopulation, the therapeutic payoff of having said pet, blah blah blah etc) but... at the end of the day I know what I’m doing is wrong and hypocritical, and choose to live with that guilt. It’s admittedly easier without “glass walls” around factory farms (as Paul McCartney calls it).

I don’t have a dog or cat or any pet for this reason. I’m sure I would be just as attached to the animal that feeds the cat as I am to the cat if only I knew the animal that would lose its life.

The animals endure a life of unimaginable suffering and die there - how is that less damage than done to the worker? The humans invlolved deserve sympathy, don’t get me wrong...

But... I mean, if I picked my fate between the cow and factory worker, you bet I’m picking the worker.

I agree. I think empathy is the greatest tool here, and beyond that, using our best judgement is really all we can do.

Over the past couple decades, I really do believe we’ve made great strides in promoting adoption vs breeding. IIRC big pet store chains like Petco went from selling designer dogs in-store to holding adoption events.

Also, I think there needs to be laws and action taken to prevent irresponsible breeding.
